Not gonna lie, for a second, I actually wondered if this was a test hahha. I was like, I haven't been on these boards long, maybe they try to trick us sometimes as a learning experience Hahahah.

but seriously, what this shows me is not all care is equal and you must do your due diligence on everything! I'm also curious who organized this support group. I'm doubtful it was Affilited with a bariatric clinic. Might be an informal group trying to do good, but being terribly misguided...

Newbies take note!!!!!!!

This is NOT "Really good information" even though Brain states that in his first sentence.

  1. Never ever take NSAIDS, no if's and's or but's
  2. Re-shrinking a pouch by drinking liquids?  Well if that were true then there would not be a daily friggin post here of someone saying "I am xx years post op and I regained xx pounds."  Because if we could all "re shrink" our pouches back to day 1 post op then why the hell aren't all post ops with regain just drinking liquids for 5 days and dropping all their regain.  People really think about that statement, its pretty ridiculous.  And take note of Audrey's analogy she wrote, it brilliant!!!
  3. It has been said again and again and again that carbonation does NOT stretch the pouch.  How can a liquid stretch the pouch when it runs right through?  Cookies, bread, and a crap ton of food is what stretches the pouch, plain and simple.
  4. If you are 10 years post op and never had a bone density test done well is that not your fault for not asking and taking your OWN HEALTH into your own hands regardless of what the PCP said, my PCP is a brain dead waste of my time, most PCPs have no CLUE how to treat post WLS patients (most not all of course).
  5. As for the peanuts I am not a "Nutritionist" but I would personally eat them, fat and all.

I will tell you why I am so vexed by your post Brian, we have so many Newbies on here that take a lot of the info people post as "law." I have personally learned over the last 2 years & 10 months who to listen to and who to totally ignore.  This I could not ignore.

It has become very apparent to me that there are a lot of Surgeons, Dietitians, Nutritionists out there in both the US & Canada working at WLS Centres that are spewing off so much crap to newbies that it makes me feel ill at times. Until I see a Surgeon or a Nutritionist or even a family doctor who has had a RNY/VSG done on themselves and they can state for a FACT that they do XXX and XXX because they live this life every single day only then I will start taking their advice because they can truly talk the talk and walk the walk.

Thank you. I normally try to ignore his posts...but this time I just could not...

That also shows that not all "veterans" know what they are talking about.

At the same time -

  • Some post op RNY can take NSAIDS and have no problem. At least for a while...
  • Some may follow the advice and add fruits to their yogurt and feel better..
  • Some people may feel more restriction after a few days of liquid..(i know I do) but that does not mean they shrank the pouch... etc etc....

Hello,

As a newbie i read the intial post and got scared. You are right when you say that newbies read information on here and we take it as "law". Myself I am still trying to figure out which surgery will work best for me. At first i was all for the Sleeve then somewhere a longthe line i started to doubt that would be the best for me, now i am contemplating having the RNY. I need good clear information from those that have had the RNY.  Thanks for you post.

You are very welcome and your post is exactly why I felt the need to respond!

Please PM (personal message) me if you want or have any questions about RNY, happy to talk.  I had the RNY November 15, 2013.

BEST decision I have ever made!

Look for a copy of "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies," it's an incredible resource that gives information on all types of surgery and really helped me make my decision. I believe you can get the ebook on Amazon, too!

Yes, I could not agree more. I have always thought the 'carbonation stretches the pouch' was the silliest statement. It may cause an uncomfortable feeling, but how could it stretch anything?

I am fortunate in that my PCP told me he was willing to learn whatever he did not know regarding my needs as a WLS patient, and he is a good listener, too. However, I am also aware I am responsible for my own care and have to be my own advocate.
