I had very long thick hair pre surgery, and about the same time (4 -5 months) I started losing handfuls of hair in the shower. I did have a meltdown but I knew it was coming. Its part of this whole journey, most of us, but not all of us lose a ton of hair with this surgery. I cut my hair shorter, to the top of my shoulders, had my hair dresser layer it and just lived with it. I am almost 3 years post op and my hair is pretty much back to normal. Its not the super thick hair of my teens & 20s but its all grown back and I have it long again.
Keep up with the high protein, your vitamins and your liquids all that is for your overall health, your hair is going to fall out after this surgery regardless. If you feel you hair is too thin by all means get a wig. I do have to tell you it bothered me that my hair was falling out and got thin, other than my Mother who obviously had known my long thick hair she is the only person who noticed that my hair was thinning.
For me personally losing some hair was such an insignificant downfall of this journey. All the amazing benefits that game with WLS outweighed the hair loss. How to get through this, focus on all the other amazing things that will be happening to you as you lose weight, not your hair.
Good luck, rest assured it does grow back.

I will be four months out in 6 days...and just this morning I noticed my hair really kicking up a notch and falling out pretty bad.
I had planned on getting it cut shorter when this starts, so I guess I need to make an appointment with my hairdresser sometime in the next couple of weeks.
Maybe we should start a thread with cute shorter hair styles so we can all get ideas for our hair!! So if you have a great shorter hair cut, post your pictures!
I too have Nioxin in the cabinet, and I know it won't stop the shedding, but I'm gonna use it anyway!

I had this same issue with thinning hair on my already thinned hair!! More so with the crown issue but overall - I knew I needed to do something.
Yes, I have been taking Biotin - but now I'm wearing a hair piece and it had worked extremely well for me. Many think I just got my hair colored darken with newer highlites! Saw my sister in law last night - and both my brother and her thought my hair grew back since mid-June. So actually, goes to show even though I know I have thin hair prior to this surgery (due to hypothyroid) ppl didn't really notice just how much thinning I had! People I work with closely know its a hair piece once I told them - my boss said if she didn't know me for this past year - she won't have never guessed its a wigs - looks soooo natural and real. Its been great with this weight loss and new wig!!
Here is the LINK -- take a look. Can even get Longer hair pieces as well etc. Last week, I had my hair dresser colored my own hair to make it look richer yet to match even closer to the hair piece... that basically was already "spot-on" for matching =) Who knows - I just might do this long term... I bought the ICED Mocha color -- maybe next spring I will buy this same hair piece but in the Sugar Maple color!!

This is a frustrating topic for me because I can only be honest and say that I can't stand the fact that I lost half of my hair. I have such thin- almost bald spots at my crown that I have not been able to wear my hair down in nearly 2 months. I increased the biotin but I can assure you that it only made the hair everywhere else grow more quickly and did nothing for my head lol I couldn't just live with the "it will grow back" philosophy or "losing the weight is worth it" so I did spend $95 on Just Naturals shampoo, conditioner, and a hair growing serum. I love the shampoo and conditioner, I feel like it makes my fine-thin hair full, even when I let it air dry and if I put product in to scrunch and curl, it looks thicker. Because of the over all lack of hair at my crown, I have no way to cover my scalp so I have to always pull the front of my hair back and pin at my crown. No one around me notices except my mother and grandmother. My fiance wishes I would shut up about it and stop complaining but I truly miss letting my hair down and feeling cute. I also wear a hat a few times a week with a small pony tail sticking out because I had cut my hair to above my shoulders when I was freakishly shedding. When my hair began to fall out, it was in HUGE clumps, handfuls, and the shower drain needed to be cleaned every time I took one. This was around 3 months out. I am now 5 months, nearing 6 and i can literally run my hands through my hair and not have a single strand on me. The shower drain doesn't need to be cleaned out for a week to 2 weeks and I see baby hairs all around my hair line nearest my forehead. I can't say much for the crown area because quite frankly I have no means of looking and the fiance would rather tear his own eyeballs out than have to tell me whether he honestly sees new hair growth or not...either way I'd complain lol So all in all, I wanted to share my story that YES it falls out and YES you will be upset and YES you can roll your eyes when people say it's just hair! We all deal differently, and call me unappreciative or not, I wish I could enjoy this weight loss feeling beautiful ALL over. I do fear that I will become victim to the hair that is never the same again but I believe I will see a light at the end of my tunnel and encourage you to do what makes you comfortable and spend what you are willing to spend on making it easiest on yourself. Don't settle on sucking it up and feeling like crap. Also, focus on your overall intake of protein and things because you want to be healthy all the way around. It doesn't stop or slow down the hair loss but if you feel good about your weight loss, it's one less stress factor in your life to not add to worrying about your hair! Best of luck to you :-)
