How long does Miralx take?
Hi, I am on day 8 of My
pre-op diet and EXTREMELY constipated. I started taking Miralx two days ago and so far no help. It's to the point that I am having trouble urinating now. I have a call into the nurse, but was hoping someone can tell me how long this should take to kick in. I have divaticulitus and this is not a good situation for my colon.

Not sure how much you are taking but when I need it bad I usually have 1 dose in the morning and then a double dose in the afternoon. That always gets things moving for me. Usually by the next morning...if not, repeat until it does.

Miralax isn't that strong of a laxative, I think of it more as a maintenance med than something to break loose your issue. I would probably take 2 dulcolax tablets and then drink a bottle of mag citrate. You will need to be near a bathroom for 6-8 hours. This will clear you--it's part of the bowel prep for colonscopy. Then, after you are clear, take a cap of miralax daily. Just my opinion-but you don't want to become impacted. That can require digital removal of the impaction or even surgery.

For maintenance I take 2-3 capful daily dipue to my IBS-C .
If you impacted - it may take 2-3 days before things start moving.
As others said - 1 cup will not do much - if anything.
When I get in that situation - I stop eating any solid foods - just liquids - until I know I have a full evacuation... (a few days) in a meantime - enema, suppository, etc to make sure things are moving...
And makesure you have Vaseline and rubber gloves ...because when things start moving - you may need to help yourself... (been there...can be very very painful)

I had a colonoscopy pre op... instead of the prescribed bottle of stuff other doctor's used, my doc had me put an entire bottle of Miralax into a bottle of gatorade...
I'm telling you that because you can up your dosage of Miralax to get things going without worry that you're overdosing on it.
Trust me, that entire bottle of Miralax did the work it was supposed to do!
I've used 4 doses in a day after surgery to get things moving quickly. It worked too... but be prepared
