Surgeon tried to perform rny, but failed
Last Friday my mother went in for a rny, after 2 years of jumping thru hoops etc. The surgeon took her to the operating room, but after 2 hours of trying, he called to tell us he was unable to do the procedure. Apparently the veins to her lower intestine are too short and there was no way to proceed? She is devastated. He informed her today that she is not a good candidate for the sleeve, if something was to go wrong with the sleeve, there is no way a rny could be performed. I am reaching out for information... if anyone has had similar situation, or any info at all would be greatly appreciated. I hate to see her so devastated. She has requested a 2nd opinion. Thank you for any info you can provide.
I have not heard of "too short veins" before. When I attended a weight loss surgery informational meeting, someone asked if a surgeon had ever been unable to perform a surgery. The answer was "yes" saying it was a patient who had a smoking history and something about "tissue being too damaged to proceed." The only information I can think of is to let you and your mother be aware of a fairly new weight loss surgery less invasive called "gastric balloon" if you care to google information for that procedure. My local hospital is offering that option in addition to more extensive non-surgical weight loss programs, as well. Best Wishes for weight loss success somehow someway.
I would get other opinions especially about the sleeve. Usually the only reason people convert sleeve to RNY is uncontrollable GERD or possible lack of weight loss. There is only one person on here I know of that had to have an immediate conversion sleeve to RNY due to complications, but I don't remember the details as to why.
Make sure she is going to Center of Excellence...

If you post the general area here you live, your might get some specific surgeon names who have done 1000 WLS and have the kind of experience that your mother would need.
