How do we incorporate Miralax?  Not sure how to use it.  I want to be prepared since my WLS is in 3 weeks.

This is the weirdest prescription for diverticulosis I have read.

I have the same thing, and have had bouts of diverticulitis  ( where the sacs are inflamed and you are sick, sick, sick ).  Always the advice is, don't get constipated.   I take stool softeners morning and evening.   I eat meat, chicken fish primarily, with a bit of veg and occasionally fruit.  My GI doc is also my rny surgeon.   Never has he given me this don't eat meat advice.

My bouts with diverticulitis were pre surgery.   Stress was a big factor.   Obviously you are going to follow your medical team, but this sounds like typical advice from nutritionists rather then specific to the disease.

Regardless,  hope your results are clear.

Diverticulitis is different than diverticulosis. One is a condition, the other an infection. My GI doctors (I've seen 3, one of whom is also my hepatologist- the one that diagnosed me during my hospital stay, the one I was referred to by my PCP that is closer to me than the hospital GI, and the hep/GI doc - one of the world's foremost experts. Literally "wrote the book" on liver transplants) explained that if I follow directions and eat healthy, I can avoid the pain of diverticulitis (infections) and other complications. To date, I have not had diverticuLITIS, the infection. The uncontrollable bleeding was caused by blood thinners given during the surgery, which is a huge concern for those of us with diverticuLOSIS. I was told that if they had known about the condition pre-surgery, they would not have preformed it.

I don't see where I wrote that I can't eat meat, just not meat ALONE. If your GI doc hasn't mentioned that you should be limiting or avoiding red meat, that would worry me. If I don't follow their directions, long term the consequence could be losing part or all of my colon. At that point, as explained to me by the nutritionist working with the GI/hep doc, my diet would be mainly liquid and meat would be completely off the table.

Now, instead of a healthy eating plan I suppose that my doctor could have told me to take laxatives everyday instead of eating vegetables and fruits, but my doctors obviously think differently than yours.

UPDATED: Re-reading this, my last comment sounds snarky, and maybe it was a little. So, I do apologize for that tone.

The diet plan I was given, even before they knew about the liver and diverticulosis, was different from most of the advice I see here. I've brought this up to the nutritionist, my PCP and the others. All have stated that 600 calories a day, primarily meat or critter vs the balanced "plate" they want me eating (1000-1200 cal/day at this point) sounds like just another fad diet that would be unsustainable for a lifetime for most and said to use this time to re-train my thinking about food - focus on balance and learn to eat NORMAL portions vs what I did before.

I have paid them thousands of dollars and my insurance has kicked in over $100k so far this year for that advice, so I'm going to follow the advice they give me for now

I am actually very familiar with the difference between the OSIS and the ITI'S versions.  I guess I didn't make that clear enough.

I have had diverticulosis  for 15 years and am post RNY  over 7 years.  Had a bit of experience with this.

I am not suggesting that you disregard the advice you have paid for.  It is contrary to what I have received.

Hmmm... so I did some googling and the thing I thought was the most interesting was that it said that the skins of vegetables and fruits are what is most beneficial... which is something I was specifically told to avoid, post RNY. Popcorn is seen as a GOOD source of non soluble fiber? Wow - another food I was told I could/should never eat again.

Oh well. One more week or two and then the colonoscopy will let me know where I stand. The liver results should be back about then too. Meanwhile, I feel good and am having zero problems with any of it.

I found it interesting though that for the majority of my adult life, I was told the pains I felt were IBS but now reading up on diverticulosis, it appears that my pre-surgery symptoms were pretty much the definition of diverticulosis. I was on a daily stool softener, but that was because I was on meds that had a high occurrence of dehydration, which is what I was told was causing my constipation and pain for the year preceding surgery.

For years, I have felt doctors have ignored my symptoms as they tell me to loose weight, and it will all get better. HA! I don't suppose any of them would appreciate it if I confronted them because I read something online though....

I also found this:

"Diverticulosis is a disorder of the Western diet which has occurred along with the ingestion of large amounts of animal products and small amounts of beneficial plant food and their beneficial fiber"

this fits in with the general things I've been told by my medical team since May.

Hi- I had gastric bypass in 2007 and lost only 35 pounds, despite sticking to my prescribed diet and eating only 600 calories a day. It's crazy but sometimes it happens. If you have taken a serious look at what you are eating, it may just be your body. The way to overcome this is to work out with weights and develop lean muscle tissue- combined with sticking to your diet, the weight will come off. I was told that I was "in the top 1% of non-compliance for not losing weight" when I was tracking every calorie and it was sometimes less than 600 calories a day. Frustrating as it is, sometimes just cutting back on food and regular exercise is not enough, despite what 95% of doctors will tell you. Hope this helps.
