My RYN surgery is on August 10th and I am really starting to get nervous. I have a friend that had the surgery done last September and she is telling me all the negative things of this surgery. How much pain she was in and how much she went back to emerge for the pain for about 6 weeks after surgery. She is also telling me how she still is unable to eat without bring it back up. It's starting to make me 2nd guess myself about doing this surgery but in some ways I feel like if I don't go threw with surgery my health won't get better and the 2 weeks of optifast I have done will be for nothing. Does anyone have some positive experience with this surgery? Thanks in advance.

I don't see it as being much of a friend if all they can talk about is the bad stuff, if it was all that bad millions of people wouldn't have it done!   Hang in there, my surgery is the 15th!  I am so excited that it's finally getting close!

Your friend reminds me of those annoying women who tell you all there childbirth horror stories when you're pregnant. She's not being very supportive. What is she saying that she wishes she had never had the surgery? The person who said she might be afraid that you may have better results than her may have hit the nail on the head. The person who said she might be afraid that you may have better results than her may have hit the nail on the head. May even just be a subconscious thing.

Hi there!  Push those worries aside!  I might be one of the lucky ones, but I have had no complications after my surgery done at TWH in Ontario.

Never visited the ER, never had any vomiting, drink water like a rockstar and I haven't met a food I can't tolerate (maybe that's not so lucky)!

Follow the plan, take care of yourself, help your tool do its job and you'll soon be wondering what all the worry was for!

You got this!

Over 100 lbs lost! and 13 lbs below goal weight!

Hi Deedee, its too bad your friend is having a hard time post op because that is certainly not the norm.  I am 2 years & 9 months post op. BEST decision I ever made. I have had ZERO complications.  I don't throw up ever.  I got food stuck once and it was my own fault for eating to fast or I took to big a bite, it was my own fault, and I learned my lesson and have not had any problems since.  I lead a very healthy, happy post RNY life.

Did I have pain post op, sure for a few days, the pain meds the hospital sent me home with worked great.  Was I tired post op, yes very much. Is it a huge lifestyle change.  But you can do it.  As long as you follow the rules set out by your WLS centre you will excel at this like most of us.

I am very proud of you for taking this step to better your health. You deserve it.  Do me a favour, try not to talk to this friend between now and surgery.  You really don't need to hear about someone else who is struggling as you prepare for this. It is major surgery.  It is very different on the other side, but you know what, the other side is AMAZING and I look forward to the day when you are telling a pre op or fresh post op what I am telling you now.  You can do this!!!

I did two weeks of Optifast too. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Come here to OH often in the next two weeks before surgery if you have any questions.

Congrats on taking this important step toward wellness, you got this!!!!

Cheers! Daisy

Thank you so much I'm getting it done at the civic next week and with all these positive feedback from all the people on this amazing help site is making home feel a lot more comfortable with my GP and my decision to go threw with this. My 2 teens kids tell me to not worry about what my so called friend says and to focus on I will be healthier for them in the long run. Thanks for sharing your story with me and putting my mind at ease.

DeeDee, Hi.  I am in the exact same spot as you are! Mine is supposed to be on the 16th, and now I am nervous.  Wondering if I am doing the right thing or not.  I know a few people who have had the RNY, and have different stories, just like everyone here.  One lady tells me a really bad story and urges me not to get it done, while the others are convinced they did the right thing by having the surgery and happy with their decision!  Others, such as family members and friends, for the most part are against it - but they are also not very educated on the topic.  Ultimately, it is my decision - but that is also difficult.  I prepared really really well all this time, did everything doctors and nut told me, and thought I was good to go.  If I change my mind, I too will feel like I just did all this for nothing!!  So now just trying to focus on the positives!!  Wishing you an easy time with this!!!
