Getting nervous about surgery
My RYN surgery is on August 10th and I am really starting to get nervous. I have a friend that had the surgery done last September and she is telling me all the negative things of this surgery. How much pain she was in and how much she went back to emerge for the pain for about 6 weeks after surgery. She is also telling me how she still is unable to eat without bring it back up. It's starting to make me 2nd guess myself about doing this surgery but in some ways I feel like if I don't go threw with surgery my health won't get better and the 2 weeks of optifast I have done will be for nothing. Does anyone have some positive experience with this surgery? Thanks in advance.

I am excited for you, that you have the opportunity to make this choice! I made the choice to have WLS, and I am so glad I did! I had no complications. I did have questions, and some pain, and restriction. I threw up a few times. But none of this was unexpected. And everything is good right now. 1.5 years after surgery, down almost 110 pounds, able to do things I had despaired of ever doing again. For me, the challenges were minor and worth it!
It is good to have some questions anytime you consider a big life change. WLS definitely is a big decision and a big life change! So it is good you are having questions about it so that you can go in eyes wide open and committed.
As with any surgery, there are risks. But one person's experiences will be different from another's. As you wrote, There are also risks with not doing the surgery.
I expect lots of other answers to follow. Even people with complications often say they would still do it again, because they are so happy with the results and life improvement. But again, you have to make your own decision. I know I am happy with my decision!
Maybe your friend is worried that you will do better than she has. If she truly throws up all the time she needs to see her surgeon. I had surgery 4 years ago and have never thrown up in that time. My surgeon tells every patient that vomiting is not normal and you need to be seen. Most likely she is not measuring her food and is eating far too much. If you overfill your pouch it has no where to go but up. I have had nothing but positives from this surgery. My highest weight was 273 and I had diabetes, highcholesterol and triglycerides and uncontrolled high blood pressure on three pills. I was out of breath going down my basement steps. I had knee and back pain every single day. I wore a tight size 28 and basically sat at home because I couldn't keep up with family and friends. By following my surgeons directions and carefully measuring my food I lost all my excess weight in nine months and have kept it off over three years. My blood sugar is now normal as well as my cholesterol and triglycerides. I have normal blood pressure on one low dose pill and walk 5 miles a day for fun. I weigh 118 to 123 and wear a size 0 or 1 in pants and an extra small top. I still measure my portions when I'm at home but I now have my life back. I am busy every day and never have knee or back pain even with extra exercise. I love my new healthy Life! I was scared and nervous too but am glad I had my surgery every Day! Before and after to follow.
Almost everyone has pre-surgery jitters. You wonder if you are doing the right thing, why can't I just lose it, what's going to happen to me? It's normal. I had a revision one year ago from lap band to RNY at age 70! There were no complications, I didn't even have to have pain meds when I came home from the hospital 2 days later and I was pretty much back to normal a week later. Everyone's journey is different. I'm sorry your friend had problems, but please know that is not always the case. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Getting all that weight off has been life changing. Just wished I had done it years ago. If you have already started the pre-op diet, I would encourage you to proceed. That's just my two cents worth. Hope things go well for you.

It makes me wonder if your friend is not being compliant with her food plan therefore is having all kinds of issues.
Is this surgery an amazing tool, yes, do you get a free pass to eat crap and lose weight, no....
You have to be willing to eat proper portions of your food (protein first, non starchy veg second) for the rest of your life. Any food issues you may/may not have do not resolve with this surgery. You will still think you want chocolate, cookies, lots of food that you really should not be eating with your plan.
There will always be apprehension- I was really nervous too.
You can be successful!
Like supper-shopper said. I'm by no means a vet - I'm 8 1/2 weeks post op. I have only thrown-up one time and it was totally my fault. I ate a little too much and way too fast and new as soon as I was finished I knew that I was in trouble. It took me about an hour to allow myself to get rid of it, but once it happened I felt much better. Lesson learned!

Thank you so much I had started to change my eating behavior a few months ago and haven't seem to be able to lose weight.
