Just about the time

I never had official diagnosis of gerd, but I had a chronic cough that I really think was gerd. I have not had that cough since RNY, and that has been a huge positive side effect of the surgery! I can talk and sing normally now--what a gift.
I too share your concerns about these complications, my surgeon says there is about a 2% chance of such complications but the percentage of complications caused by obesity is much much higher along with such a reduced quality of life.
Best of luck and hope reading these posts helps. :-) I am still pre-op and also found comfort reading these recent post. :-)
One last comment - keep searching for information and reading and do what you feel is best for you! When I was pre-op, I found OH to be the best source of complete information (and different viewpoints to help in weighing pros and cons).

Hi Blueberry Pie (LOVE your username, that's adorable!) I'm a math person, and the statistics all say that THE ODDS ARE IN YOUR FAVOUR, and you are going to be just fine! Do your part...follow your pre-op diet, follow all post-surgery instructions, and things are going to go your way! You are correct that RNY shows better resolution of GERD than VSG (but some people with VSG do indeed have resolution of GERD!) It's normal to be nervous (you'd be really weird if you weren't, lol!) but think of the outcome you desire, and it's all worth it. I wish you every joy on this journey. We're all here for you. Stay away from the bad stories...surround yourself with hope and love, and take care of yourself.

I had the name on another site so I just kept the same. I love Blueberry Pie, and have gotten it often with ice cream at my favorite restaurant that does homemade! But now it will be bye bye pie!!! Thanks for the encourgement - it acutally helps a whole lot!!!! I guess I have had my mind made up for a long time - else I would not have gone through 6 months of preop, keeping diet journal, etc. Now that it is getting close, just need to hear some positives!!! Thanks again!
I'm a nurse...worked on a surgical floor for a time, and I have seen complications from All Surgeries. I saw a woman end up in ICU because she got a blood clot from and IV. No medical intervention is without risks. At the end of it, you have to weigh (haha! Weigh!) your own particular risks a nd benefits. I know there are risks for me. I also know I am in my 40's, I weigh 370 pounds, and I just keep getting fatter. The risks of me staying where I am are far greater. Would it be less risky for me to lose it without surgery? Sure! That's why I have put off the surgery for ten years! But that's not happening, clearly. Anyway...it is good to know the risks,,,just remember to the risks of not losing the weight.
