Four years post-op, hair falling out in clumps
Just reaching out to the years out wls people to see if this is anything you guys have experienced. So like I said, I'm a little over four years post op, and my hair has been falling out in clumps daily for about the past year. I was hoping it would stop eventually, but no dice. I'm honestly not sure how I'm not bald since it's constantly on me, in the shower, in my brush or falling out in clumps if I run my fingers through my hair.
Protein and vitamin intake are good. I'm genuinely at a loss as to what to do, if there is indeed anything that I can do. Just wondering if there's anyone out there with some insight. Thank you in advance.

When was your last set of full labs? You should be having a full lab work-up every year. Many of us have to supplement beyond the multi vitamin to stay healthy. I keep a spreadsheet of my lab numbers to track downward trends so I can correct it before I get deficient.
I would start with labs to figure it out.
Protein and vitamin intake are good, or they ARE good? Did they test everything? A full set of labs is about 15 vials of blood. Did you look at the results, or are you taking their word for it? Your results can be "in range," but if they are on the low end, you can have horrible problems, just like you've been having.

A few things that can cause hair loss: Low iron with low ferritin. When they do lab work - insist on them testing your ferritin.
The other one is proteins, then thyroid. Ask for a full throid panel. Even if TSH is OK - sometimes when we follow-up low carb diet - and are low in iron - the conversion from T4 to T3 is impaired so our TSH and T4 can be ok, but Free T3 can be low.
Low iron can cause a lot of major issues in the body...

I lost a TON of hair with my thyroid... and I had to find a doctor that was aggressive in treating the thyroid issues because many of them just look at that TSH number and go on down the road... the T4 and T3 are very important as H.a.l.a. AB. pointed out.

Hi,
I have not had my bypass yet, still dealing with appointments, but I do see the Surgeon today. I had prior open abdominal surgery about 5 yrs ago, and lost around 40 lbs rapidly from being in the hospital for 2 weeks with not eating. About 6-7 months afterwards, my hail started falling out like you in clumps. I was devastated and my Doctor recommended I take 5,000 mg of Biotin each day to help. It takes about 2-3 weeks to get fully into your system before you notice the hair loss slowing down. But it does work. I have been taking it everyday for the last 5 yrs. I will say, that every time I have tried to stop taking the Biotin, the hair starts to fall out again. Bonus, your nails and eyelashes will never look better. lol
I'm dreading the bypass because I know the hair will once again fall out, and the older we get, the less likely the chance that it will all come back.
I find the Biotin at Walmart is the cheapest it's $6.47 for a bottle of 100. You find it in the vitamin isle.
Best of luck
Hi! Lets see, certain medications, can cause hair to fall out. From anti-depressants to infusions. Stress, or even a shock to the body like a car accident. I have thin hair and mine falls out constantly from my Fibromyalgia. I was just reading some research the other day explaining how it causes your hair to fall out. Hope that helps and gives you some ideas to search.
