Calories. How do you decide?
So I think I'm losing really slowly. I'm 10 weeks out and down 40 pounds. An average of four pounds a week is great, except I lost 28 in the first month. So I'm looking at calories...
My nut says to have 600 a day. Most people on OH stay around 800 it seems and this is what I average. I honestly don't know if I could do 600 a day. And then of course, there are those who say I need 1000 or 1200 to keep my metabolism going. What's the truth RNYers?

well- I'd first say- do not try and replicate what you lost in your first month-- just won't happen IMO. I think that 4# a week loss is great honestly. Monthly I think I averaged about 10-12 pounds after the initial month, lately its been 5-6.
My calories have been set to 1000 daily on MFP since I was about 4 months post-op- before then I didn't kept my focus on protein only. (My surgeons book suggests 1200 calories/day) I've recently has to reign it in a little- but in reality I was trending over a 1000 calories far too often- proof that 1200 is too much for me to lose.

I'm right there with ya sister. My surgeon has never told me a calorie amount. Just protein and that's it. 600 seems low to me to get your protein in, did they give you an example of a menu with that? Here are my stats, I had surgery 5/2, so we are close.
Week 1: 5.6
Week 2: 6.4
Week 3: 1
Week 4: 2.6
Week 5: 4.6
Week 6: 1.6
Week 7: 1.8
Week 8: 4.6
Week 9: 3.8
Week 10: 1.4
Week 11: 0
So mine is definitely a trend of stair steps. This past week nada. Ugh.

The truth is- you dont need 1000-1200 calories. If you NEED it, the energy is stored in your body as fat. You body needs to use the fat as fuel.
I didnt count calories, I just followed my surgeons plan, ate low carb/no carb and exercised all that I could.
When felt faint, I had a snack of tomatoe, cucumber tzaki, squash, peppers. Cheese stick maybe once a day.
No kidding it was hard. My mentor told me I was a ***** at times (probably hangry) and sometimes forgetful.
The truth is, go as low as you calorie wise. Force your body to use its fats stores for energy.

Three pounds below Goal!!! Yay !
My surgeon and nutritionist didn't give me a calorie limit until I asked about it. They told me that if I'm not really exercising, then I shouldn't go above 800. Adding exercise requires higher calories, protein and fat.
MFP has me between 800-1200 day on average, depending on my activity level.
