Going too well?

So this is going to be a bizarre post.

I am 5 five weeks post op and it seems like I am having too easy of a time.

At 5 weeks I can gulp water no problem, am able to eat salad, all different types of meat without issue, take big bites without issues, don't have to chew things to mush, haven't thrown up or felt nauseous..I haven't done anything sweet as I am scared of dumping and have never been really into sweets to begin with, but the other day I ate 3/4 of a small chicken shwarma with the pita without feeling anything in terms of fullness. (Before surgery it would have a large one with a bag of chips and a diet coke...so I definitely notice the smaller stomach)

Now granted I do have days where I feel like I am having a bad pouch day and I can barely eat my meals. I also am trying to eat healthy meals and small porions for everything. It just seems like people have some issues following the surgery and I am getting kind of worried that I have none when it comes to food...

Does anyone have any opinion or guidance on this? This is definitely my anxiety at play but has anyone else experienced this?

I had no issues either, though I was advanced much slower than you. At 5 weeks out, I was on soft foods, but I never had any trouble with chicken, cheese, eggs, steak, or other foods known to cause some people discomfort. We're lucky in that regard. It's great you haven't tested whether or not you dump. Keep on with that as long as possible. For the first 6 months after my surgery, I just assumed I dumped.

Your pouch is still healing, so I'd like to caution you about overdoing it in terms of portion sizes. If your surgeon gave you post-op eating instructions regarding portion sizes, please follow them. Your nerve endings were cut, so you won't get a full feeling for a while. If you weren't given instructions, you need to find a dietician well-versed in bariatrics to advise you.

I would also caution you about eating bread during your honeymoon period, it will slow your weight loss and could lead to further cravings for simple carbs like bread, pasta, rice...etc; and that can totally derail your weight loss and lead to gaining, even early on after your surgery.

I'm not trying to sound critical or harsh, so please don't think I am.

We really need to focus on eating good, dense, lean protein, even after we hit goal. Some healthy fats are fine, but simple carbs, processed foods, and added sugars ( and fruit, in my case ) need to be avoided during the weight loss phase.

Edited for typo.

Audrey gave you wonderful feedback- all good...Good is wonderful.

Love me some Shwarma... but be careful about the pita. My Docs motto has always been "Protein first, then veggies and then IF you have any room fruit adn then carbs." He never says no carbs just put it at the end of the list.

Did I ever have carbs during weightloss? Yes but it was maybe once every 2 weeks...

Don't gulp drinks....and dont take big bites and fail to chew well. Nerves have been cut and our pouch is still very vulnerable at this point.  You are still healing and can cause damage.

Feeling an over abundance of comfort at this point is both a blessing and a curse.  I am just like you in the way I didn't have any ill effects.  No sickness, nausea, never felt overly full, no foods bothered me.  IT puts way more responsibility on YOU AND YOUR CHOICES!!!

Remember  just because "you can" doesn't mean " you should".

People like us need to be EXTRA careful with the eating.  Measure always so you arent overeating and chew well.  Don't be testing too many waters a mth out, or I fear you will be at risk of falling back into your old habits.  It's bad enough that your appetite and quantities increase with time as the months pass as it is, savour this time of small amts.

Be happy you don't have terrible painful issues, but very carefully monitor yourself for portions and poor choices because if you arent getting the pain and sickness. .......it's very easy to slide down that slippery slope.  It's just you and smart choices that will keep you track.  These first few months are precious.. stick to your best behaviour to get your best results.

I am almost 4 months out and have had similar experiences as you have.  I vomited for the first time last week after eating a piece of dry chicken too fast and not chewing it well enough.  I was kind of glad for the reminder because I haven't been very careful lately.  I too have felt like this has almost been too easy when I read about the difficulties others are having.  Thank you for posting about this and for the comments left by others.  It really helps me to get focused again and pay attention to what I am doing.
