So last night I was going back over my notebook I received from my surgeons office. The very first page is my checklist of things I have to do before surgery. I don't know why but I totally missed the part that says "12 mos medically supervised diet by primary care physician"!!! When I looked at it back in April when I got it, I thought they meant my 12 mos of health education program through my insurance!!!!! OMG!!!!! I've missed 3 months if this is the case! SHOOOOOOOT!!!! I've got a call in to the office to verify this. Man! I totally may have messed up! I feel so stupid!

If you have had regular primary care appointments in which obesity was discussed and your plan to reduce weight was mentioned they may be sufficient.

Sounds like the surgeon requires it, not the insurance.  Talk to his office and see if they will accept less months.

Do you have Blue Cross Blue Shield of TN?  If so, then they typically do require a full 12 months of medically supervised diet by your PCP.  Others might require that as well but I know for sure that BCBS TN does.  I used to work in a bariatric office as a Bariatric Specialist and so I know a good bit about what is required for many of the insurance companies for bariatric surgery approvals.

Please disregard my earlier response.  Definitely call your surgeons office to clarify their requirements.

I have BCBS CoVA (Virginia). Their only requirement is a 12 month Health Education Program that is done monthly on a phone call with a Nurse through them for 30 minutes. It's not the insurance that is the problem, it's the clinic. I put in 2 calls yesterday and getting ready to call again. They're just not answering their calls! gRRRRRR

Got clarification this morning. It's for sure that I only have to do the 12 mos through my insurance and not the 12 mos supervised diet! Shew! What a relief. Thanks for all the words of advice!
