I've lost 125 pounds (100% of my excess weight) and maintained for almost 6 years. The key to losing the weight and keeping it off is to follow the WLS rules... forever! I will allow a few cookies now and then, but they are always accounted for in my total calorie allotment for the day. WLS is not a cure for obesity, but it helps you manage the disease.
Thank you for your response! WLS is absolutely not a cure, but a tool that has to be used in order to work. I had lap band surgery in August 2007, and lost around 70 pounds in the first 6 months. I haven't lost any more than that, and I have maintained that loss - except for 8 pounds I seem to play back and forth with. Even when all the fluid was removed from my band 3 years ago I didn't gain, so I'm fairly familiar with the process. I just haven't been able to get the scale to move on my own. I'm looking forward to the ways my life will improve after surgery, but I'm realistic about it too. Thanks again for the support!

My surgeon said to expect 75% excess weight loss. They may have been for his patients. Either way, they like to give statistics. I had RNY in 2008. My highest BMI was 53. I lost all of my excess weight in 14 months and now maintain at a BMI of 22. Sadly, many people I know who had surgery the same time as me have had huge regains. They did not learn the healthy habits they need to keep off the weight.
It is definitely hard work, but if you take responsibility for your weight and do not make excuses, you can lose it all and maintain that loss. It's completely up to you.

I started out at my highest weight at 322 pounds. I am down 143 pounds but I still want to lose more. My clothing size started at 26 gushing out. I am now in a size 12 jeans and size large top depending on what brand.
I stopped drinking alcohol. I know that was a major blunder in my weight loss. I would have lost more. I didn't. I am measuring and weighing all my food documenting it also.
I am losing weight. I still feel restriction. I am focusing on protein first. I know if I eat carbs I will stop losing.
You are doing a great job!! Thank you for your response and support!

I'm 11 months out from surgery and have lost 85% of my excess weight. losing 23 more pounds will put me in the normal BMI range. I'm still losing, though it's slowed a bit in the last few months. Mostly it's dealing with wanting to eat more now, not with my body being unable to lose the weight.
Going to give some unsolicited advice here... Lose the weight as quickly as you possibly can. even 11 months out from surgery and it gets HARD!
