Wendy's chili?
So I've heard newish post ops can have Wendy's chili. I've seen it before, but thought people were being sarcastic. But then I saw it again in the recent post about dehydration.
Is it true and when would I be able to have it? I can have chicken and turkey now if its moist but I have to stay away from other tougher meats. But chili is finely chopped so idk. I'm struggling with protein... It sounds like something I would like to try. When the time is right. Advice?
..Edited for typo..

I more than anyone on this site "preaches" Wendy's Chili. But, you need to be careful as a new post op. The easiest proteins to digest for the first few months are; chicken, turkey, tuna, egg, whey protein isolate, milk, yogurt, beans, peas. Later...Maybe a month or two you can "try...At home" things like beef, shrimp, and nuts. Hopefully the nuts are plain and chewed to a puree...Same with the beef. You may need a sip of water so they don't get the nuts stuck down your throat. Once you have your first taste of beef WAIT 5-10 minutes. Say to your pouch..."pouch here is something new...Do you like it"?? He or she will let you know soon enough. Take it easy on the beef...It is harder to digest than the other meats. The hardest meats to digest are pork, deer, and bear. I would wait 6 months before trying any of those...Always at home (if you have issues...Dumping).
But for me...Once I found I could handle beef I found Wendy's Chili. I would add my own cheese to mine...I still do (cheaper). I add one package of crackers (not good for new post ops). With beef you may have problems at one or two months. You stop eating it for a few months...Then say at 6 months, you go back and try it a little. Your pouch may accept it or reject it. Each person is different. Same with pork. I can eat pork, but it doesn't sit well with me. Almost like pre op eating too much Chinese food...How you've eaten it...But it isn't sitting well in your stomach. You will find different foods just will not sit well...So you avoid them. I can really taste fat post op in meats.
But for me...A non cook, Wendy's Chili is what I had for breakfast for about the first 5 years...Just one spoonful. I would then eat other really good foods for breakfast (like cooked spinach or vegetables)...In case I tested and cheated later in the day. At least my breakfast was good. Brian
Thanks Brian. I enjoyed your post about dehydration and ketosis. I used a ketone stick today, and it's in the darkest color possible. But I'm not losing that much yet. I expect it to start soon, as Ive been stuck at 259.4 for 3 days, weighed today and was 258.8 but I moved the scale and it said 260! Darn home scales, I cant wait for wednesday at my first post op visit to see what I really weigh. My muscles feel like ive been doing workouts every day but it's to early for that so I havent. I know it's the ketosis. I'm scared its eating my muscle since I can hardly get protein in. All things to discuss with my surgeon! Thanks for your reply!

It's very common, but I never had it myself. I'm not sure which stage it would fall under.

I had Wendy's chili at three and a half months out. I could only eat half of a small container. I was out of town for a meeting and wanted something quick and easy.
Three weeks after surgery I started to make my own chili from ground turkey and was able to eat 1/3 cup servings for meals. Turkey is easier to digest than beef and I could control the seasonings.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
OOO yay! Do you have a recipe? I wonder if it would sit well with me, since I can have turkey now!?

If you can have chicken and turkey now I don't see why you couldn't try the chili.
It is pretty soft at least the times I had it. I personally would consider it a soft food just above pureed.. Get a small and take a taste, chew well and see how it sits. If the seasoning and beef don't bother you then I would say you can have it, but remember you should still measure out your portions.
If your plan says 1/4 cup measure that out. You don't want to over eat.
early out I are chili, but mostly homemade and I switched to turkey to keep the calories low. I don't eat it now because it's really a slider food for me and will go right through me. I can eat a lot more at 11 months than I could at 2 or 3 months post op, and chili just doesn't keep me satisfied for long.
If your body handles it well, enjoy.
I believe I waited until 6 months out to have it since I really was not supposed to have beef for the first 6 months, but i did make the turkey chili at home. Browned 1 pounds of ground turkey, added i think it was bush's chili magic. Just log it all into my fitness pal and they provide the stats- I want to say 200 cal for a serving and you may only be able to do 1/2 or a 1/4 cup.
you are really early out though. if you are concerned about it and they have given you clear for turkey- you could always put in food processor to be safe.
I had wendy's chilli at about 3 weeks out. I was one of the things my nutritionist suggested for easy digestion. It was and still is one of the easiest things on my belly. It doesn't seem to keep me full for very long though. I had some thicker chili from somewhere else last week and that kept me full for a long time. I think next time I have wendy's chili I will drain the liquid.
