Oldie but Goodie but too old?
I am 58 years old and am 4 years post op from VSG. I had great success and lost 100 lbs with my sleeve and have kept it off, but the GERD/reflux is so bad. I have another 75 lbs to lose and my surgeon wants to do RNY. Due to my age, I am concerned that with RNY I will lose the weight quickly and I will look much older. Am I nuts? With the sleeve I lost slow and steady. The hanging skin around my neck and face is minimal but obvious. I guess my question is for the ladies who had RNY who are over 55. Any regrets? Thanks to everyone who took the time to stop by. Hugs!
I had a rny after lapband and I'm finding it true that revision patients lose slower .

From what I've seen on here in the last 4 years,it seems revision patients lose more slowly. RNY was my first weight loss surgery and I was 52 when I had it. I lost 150 pounds in about 9 months. I do have some saggy tummy skin that's covered by clothes, saggy arms that have toned and don't look too bad now and a few more wrinkles. BUT I would do it again in a heartbeat. My life is no longer limited by my size and my high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure and diabetes are all gone. I'm not on any meds for those things any more. I am no longer a heart attack waiting to happen and now I walk 4 miles a day for fun and without pain even though I have severe rheumatoid arthritis. It was all worth a few wrinkles.
Start saving for a face lift. I did. I hope to have one this year.

Well, since you asked, Yes, you are nuts (you did ask). Seriously, I believe you are focused on the wrong thing and perhaps delaying important surgery.
TO WIT:
1- Ask a Plastic Surgeon - the rate at which you lose has almost NOTHING to do with how much saggy skin you have. Slow may give you more time mentally to adjust but it does not really lessen the amount of saggy skin. Age, length of time at a high weight, genetics, etc, these factors do control how much sag you have. If you are concerned, find a plastic surgeon that gives a free consult and get his/her opinion as to what the next 75 pounds loss has in store for you. You can choose if you want PS later. But now get a prof opinion on whether you can reduce the amount of sag by losing slowly (I do not think so, but I am not a pro - you can get a prof assessment for free).
2- GERD is a real health risk, not just hearth burn. I understand that GERD is a risk for esoph cancer. What does your dr say?
3- I was 57 1/2 when I had the RNY. After losing the weight, the next best thing was that my hiatal hernia was fixed and no more heartburn - it's a miracle. Totally agree with HALA - Plastic surgery is my friend.
If I need to choose between getting the RNY and eliminating the GERD on one hand and saggy skin on the other - I come down on the side of getting the GERD fixed.
It looks like my Signature disappeared. I've got to go look for it.

I agree with Sharon. If revising to RNY is your only option for the acid reflux, then do it. My father died from esophageal cancer and it was horrible seeing him in so much pain. If you think there may be another option, go get a second opinion from another surgeon.

I was near age 55 when the surgeon bent over the operating table and said, "this will give you fifteen more years you would have never seen otherwise." Yes, I lost weight quickly. Yes, I look older. Yes, I have hanging skin. Yes, I've had complications and a small amount of regain. Excess skin or looking older wasn't even a blip on my worry-meter. Regain and complications were, but I am happy to be alive and appreciative to be given this second chance even if I don't make fifteen more years. No regrets.
