Why do I find the RNY so much scarier than the sleeve? Help!
It is totally normal what your feeling. I was totally going to do the sleeve then as I sat in my final preop appointment with my surgeon and she asked me a lot of questions, one of the questions she focused on was "how many diets have you done in the last 4 years" well I did a lot she then stated the sleeve wouldn't work for me for long term success as neither did the diets, that I had to change my brain and the only surgery that would allow that to happen would be RNY. Boy at that moment I was disappointed BIG TIME however I went home and really thought about why I'd always gain my weight back after loosing on every diet and realized that RNY will allow me the time to retrain myself by holding me accountable for every bite I take. WOW I don't regret it at all. I never never thought I would go from a size 28/30 pants and 4x shirt to a size 6 pants and xsmall or small shirts. I never thought I'd get below 200lbs let alone where I'm at now. Its an amazing journey and YES its hard at times. Many times I've cried over not being able to eat something but here I sit 11 months later the healthiest I've been in over 25 years. You have to do what is right for you, nobody can make that choice as its your body.
I wanted the RNY but also found out that I had a hiatal hernia and through that my heartburn was just stress. I am SO HAPPY that the hernia was fixed during the surgery. While you are not experiecing symptoms now from the esophg problems, you could later on and this will prevent them.
I would talk to your dr about the psychtopics medicines you are taking and give them some time to research any changes in meds you would need.

I didn't read the above post but I'll state I understand your thoughts and I had them too, a lot of people do here. I had VSG and it was my popular opinion of why do "more" if more wasn't needed, it also caused less concern from my hubs and close friends or family. Now is any of that justified. Not really when you go with science and if you do a lot of reading on here. Looks like people with both WLS do well, have similar long term results, and enjoy the same benefits and failures too.
You can overwhelm yourself with facts and stats from the internet. This one has this, or that, you think this is a plus or a minus. Really I'm going to be honest here and tell you to first think about what your really after... probably weight loss. Both will get you there. Dumping isn't something to overly worry on, some people get it and some do not. Some people have it disappear a year or two after so it can't be counted on to assist you in not eating certain foods, because you might get it, you might not, and it might go away so... don't count it in or out.
So after you've talked to your doc and let them weight in on the topic take your thoughts and mix them with theirs and see what's most comfortable. I'm certain that both procedures can be a success for people, so pick the one that makes you worry less, and feel the best about doing it. There is a mental component to all success and if you doubt that you've made the right choice it may hinder your results.

Don't be afraid. My doctor says that he does almost an equal amount of both surgeries and they are both successful. Unless he has a specific reason for one or the other surgery because of health issues, he lets a person choose which they'd rather have. I choose the RNY. I'm not sure why ... it just makes more sense to me. I am four months out and could have gone to work after a week of surgery. I took two weeks off not knowing what to expect. I did expect more pain and discomfort than I experienced, that's for sure!
Whichever way you choose, getting healthy is your goal. Either one will help you in reaching your goal. I feel so much better and I'm just into my fourth month!
Good luck!
