What's On Your Thursday Menu, RNYers?
Morning AV.Good morning. I had a much better night last night. Well, not by my food, but overall I felt better. I ended up eating a slice of pizza for dinner at the meeting, and topped it off with some strawberry cheesecake. I came in at about 1000 calories, win. Resetting and being better today. My hubby got home last night, so that's good.
A few weeks ago when we were ordering my hubby's grill, the lady at the garden center talked me into buying some praying mantis eggs for the garden. So, I bought 2 sacks. I kept them in my warm enclosed from porch, but it's been almost 2 weeks and they hadn't hatched, so I moved them out into the bush a couple of days ago and popped the lid. I had checked on them everyday and still nothing. Well, we got a pretty good thunderstorm last night and I was worried about them, but when I went to check on them today look what I found! If you look closely in the wood shavings to the right of the egg sacs, you can see a teeny tiny little praying mantis. Each sack is supposed to have about 200 praying mantis! I'm excited to see them around this summer.
QOTD: I think the thing I like the most is BBQing in the yard. I don't camp, because our idea of camping is renting a hotel room near the beach. I do love the beach, but we're so busy that we don't go as often as we'd like. But having people over, watching the kids run and play in the sprinklers and sitting while my hubby chars some yummy meat on the grill? That is heaven to me. I plan on doing it 3 times this weekend!

Praying Mantis babies: such a fun thing for your kids (and your inner kid) watch!
Praying mantises always make me think of the explanation of evolution from Joel Achenbach's excellent book, "Why Things Are," which basically explains natural selection like this:
After mating, the female mantis eats the head of the male mantis. You would think the male mantises would get wise and not go there! But, the wiser, head-protecting male mantises never got their genes passed on. Natural selection. The male mantis babies have the gene for "head bitten off after mating is ok with me!" The other males kept their heads, but their genes died with them.
I saw cabbage and sausage! hahaha!
