STRESS!
I wouldn't think we gain weight from stress.
We gain weight by eating and/or drinking. Any feeling: stress, grief, happiness, loneliness, jealousy, etc. can affect our awareness of using food/drink to fill some kind of a a void or emptiness.
Many people don't eat when under stressful feelings. It is easy to revert to old habits when I'm experiencing different feelings, including stress.
Putting every bite and drink into a food log, measuring, counting calories, grams of carbs, grams of protein and ounces of fluid help me stay on my bariatric eating plan. I can see by the above totals if I'm "slipping" and letting empty or high calorie foods in. I still do this at 7+ years out from my RNY.
I have found ways (non food related) to handle my stress and feelings.
Also getting on the scale every morning helps me realize quickly if I'm gaining weight and I can take immediate action.
Best of wishes sorting this out.
Penny
What are some things you do that are non food related ? My whole life has centered upon food like most of us.

- polish my nails
- -watch Netflix
- knit, knit, knit
- go for a walk
- I drink unsweetend ice or hot tea
- go visit someone
- clean something
- read the newspaper
- listen to an audiobook
- take a soak in the tub
- go to bed early - if I'm wanting to get into empty calorie foods
- ride my exercise bike
- check emails
- delete emails
- view Instagram or Facebook posts
- read over my daily food log to see IF I'm at my calorie/carb limit and can have some protein, veggies or fruit
Hopefully you get the idea. Whatever works for you to get your head hunger going, going, gone!
It also helps if there are no high calorie/nutrient deficient (sweets, chips, crackers, bread etc.) in the house!!

Why do we tend to gain weight from stress? I lost my dear dog buffy two weeks ago. Gained 9 pounds and thank goodness I've lost half of it. This is tough but so worth the journey. Thank you OH friends for allowing me to share.

sorry for your loss. I still miss every pet I have lost.
Stress is just another word for life. Life happens and we have to deal appropriately.
