Stay away from sugar free hard candy. You shouldn't be eating anything like that after surgery.

I'm curious why sugar free hard candy is a no no... We can definitely have crystal light and other sugar free drink mixers, so how do the sugar free candies/mints differ?
I'm asking because I am sucking on a sugar free piece of candy right now, and I've found them to be lifesavers right now.
I'm very careful not to chew them up and swallow hard pieces...

They can have a lot of sugar alcohols in them, and that can cause a LOT of gastric distress. Much worse than regular sugar.
They can also get cravings started. One piece is fine, but many find they start grazing on them all day long. The calories add up, even though they appear to be low calorie. With things that small, and the unfortunate way they are allowed to round calories down with small items like mints and hard candies. You can easily eat 200 calories in a day with those things -- 25% of your daily food goal.
They also can be a serious gateway back to eating real candy. It just isn't worth it.
