Weight Loss Surgery
I am a bit of a private person and in the Fall I will be getting WLS in Ottawa. I will be taking leave from my job (about 4 weeks) and I was wondering if the "sick leave form" from the doctor/hospital states that it comes from the Weight Management Clinic and it is for WLS surgery? I really don't want to broadcast this to the whole world? Anyone feel like me? I would hate to use my vacation leave for the surgery but I will do that if it means keeping this private. p
I'm scheduled in June in Ottawa. After your surgeon's appointment, when the surgery coordinator calls you (around 6-8 weeks before surgery), you will be sent a generic letter for work leave purposes. It does not state bariatric surgery. I don't think that you are obliged to reveal your medical situation to your employer so just state its a "medically necessary procedure". I'm not that comfortable revealing my upcoming surgery beforehand because I don't want everyone to weigh in with their views. However, afterwards it might be difficult not to discuss because I'm normally an open person. I'm taking it day by day. I wish you the best.
If you work in a unionized environment and have a HR dept and or Occ Health dept, they do not specifically need to know why you are off. You could ask your doctor to give you a letter from his office without letter head details(just make sure his name, address & ph. number on it). That should be good enough. You have the right to be off without question.
So check with your doctors office about a generic note.
Cheers,
Skotti
