Hi I'm Meaghan. I had RNY 4 and a half weeks ago.

Did any of you have trouble with things just...not digesting? I ate a few well timed bites of fish at like 7 (fish being something my RD recommended as soft). I felt it was stuck and not going down. Sure enough 3 hours later I started sipping on some liquid and got immediately nauseated and threw up fish.

You just learned you aren't ready for fish yet. Your body was so clear with you..isn't that great?

Time to go back down the soft food chain. Your pouch may be sore too for a bit.

Keep reading. There is lots of information for brand new post ops. You just started a hell of a ride.

That's what I was afraid of. My body is being weird. It was fine with ground beef last week, today 2 bites had me in pain. Pretty much I'm living on protein shakes with a few bites of things to try. Frustrating that I'm a month out and "able" to advance my diet slowly and find myself struggling with this stage.

Just make sure you are getting your 60-80 gms of protein, even if they are from shakes as you transition to soft foods.  If you are not, I would suggest weighing your food at first to get calibrated on 1 or 2 oz, which is not bad size serving a first.  Try that small serving and chew alot.  Continue to wait awhile after eating until drinking.

You had major surgery - recovery is 6-12 weeks.  Hang in there - the anesthesia is not all out of your system yet.

PS - I had pouched flounder, not grilled/sauteed.  As moist as possible.

early on I ate things I knew I could process, refried beans with some cheese, sift turkey bacon ground up finely with some fat free gravy, things like that. keep in mind that your pouch is new and it may take time to ease back into some foods.

How much of the fish did you eat? early on you may only get 2-4 small bites in.

I had maybe 2 oz of fish total. I would say all of it came back out.

I was wondering if maybe your fish was to dry. I had a few bites of salmon from red lobster with no trouble at all. I felt so so so good about eating solid non soup while out to dinner with family ( looking at me saying awe poor Sheri is just sipping soup , and asking me why I did this to myself , or the shaking of the head while they stuff their faces ) I was so satisfied . I went to the store and bought salmon, cooked it at home and it didn't go as well.... It was a little drier. I didn't throw it up because I could just feel that it wasn't sitting well and stopped eating . Anyways it's just a thought .

Another thought is, I'm finding that at 3.5 weeks out, sometimes my pouch doesn't want food just because it's time for my meal. I was measuring out my 1/4 cup of eggs everyday and doing fine and then realized that some days I can not fini**** just because it's on my plate and time to eat and measured out to the appropriate amount. I think I'm finally learning for the first time in my life to listen to my body... And not eat because it's there.

Good luck moving farther along. I'm sorry that you had a tough time .

Within about 2 months of eating solid foods I learned pretty quickly what worked and what didn't. I could usually tell as soon as it hit my mouth.  For me chicken breast was a no go if it was dry unless I was really really careful to chew it to mush..even then it was rough.  Almost 3 years out I still cant eat much chicken breast.  Thighs were a better option for me.  Not just because they are more moist but because they are smaller.

Fish I have types I can and types I cant.  Sometimes it**** or miss.  I have never thrown up but that's more a me thing then the food I think.  I know that's unusual.  I do better with white flakey but meaty fish like sea bass.  Salmon is okay if its cooked medium.

I am allergic to beef and pork as of a year or so ago so I don't eat that but when I did pork was usually hard.  Good steak was okay if it was cooked no more then medium.

Anyway...you will figure it out.  It may be that something was stuck if you threw up and nauseated after liquid.  That sounds like it might have been just a piece sitting over the hole and the liquid backing up.  If it was the "fish" then you would have been sick before the liquid.

Just my 2 cents..worth about 1 in today market!

I wasn't able to eat fish or ground beef until 8 or 10 weeks out.

Timing is something you have to experiment with. Some things take a while. Some things take months before you can eat them without a problem. Some days are easier than others. Pay attention, and listen to what your body tells you.

So far, you sound completely normal.
