Help! I need some non-shake protein supplement suggestions.

During the several weeks before and after surgery, I drank lots of protein shakes and thought they tasted great.  Then one morning, I could not seem to get one down.  The smell, taste and texture made me feel sick to my stomach.  I tried different flavors and brands, but I kept having the same reaction.  I talked to my surgeon and he said it was okay to back off the shakes.  Now I am two months post-op and worried that I am not getting enough protein even though I am eating mostly meat and cheese.  I have even added in a snack of these item to help boost my numbers.

Does anyone have suggestions of other ways to supplement my protein intake without eating more?  Do pills work the same way as shakes or are there other liquid supplements that are not "milky" and taste good?

Check out a couple of the nutrion websites - there are all sorts of protein products - soups, pudding, unflavored powder that you add to other stuff to up the prot content.  Seafood - shrimp and crab were great for me, but I think I waited until 3 months to try them.  I think that it takes twice as long to heal your insides as outside, so your insides as as healed as your incisions were at 1 month.

When you are only a few weeks post-WLS, you are more confined to shakes, yogurt, cottage cheese and poached fish, but a two months you may be able to experiment.  Check with your surgeon or Nuit if you are ready to try some other things.  When you finish the post-op phase, you will have many choices and life will be better - I could even rejoin civilization and eat out with friends (and take a doggy bag home for the rest of the week) .

Thanks for responding! I had never heard the stomach healing process described that way.  I just ordered some bone broth to try and I will check out those sites.  Have you tried any of those other products?

I am about 18 months out and I use lots of different high-protein products.  Once a week I have hi protein pancakes with greek yogurt, not syrup, on top, high protein pretzels.  But these also contain some carbs.  I ventured little off the post-op diet until I got to goal weight(about 9 months).  The bigger risk is that people do not get to goal weight, not that they get underweight.  So, you want to develop a plan that sticks to the post-op diet and gets you to goal weight.

At 2 months out,it was still pretty early.  At tht stage my choices were still a prot shake a day, Greek yog, moist poultry and cotttage cheese with a spoon of spag sauce and heated (WLS lasagna).

Are you getting in at least 60 gs of protein?  Just curious, how much protein does bone broth have?

Why are you worried you're not getting enough protein?  Have you been tracking it using some app like myfitnesspal?  I track every bite of food/protein to be sure I'm getting enough.  I weigh and measure all my food too, so I'm not worried about not getting enough, I know when I don't.  It makes things a lot simpler in the long run.  I'm able to get in 60-80 grams of protein a day with mostly meat and some cheese and I get around 800 calories a day, and it's working for me.  So, maybe give that a try.

Because I am only 2 months post-op, I am only supposed to have 1/4 cup (2 oz) of food at each meal and no snacks.  Even if I just eat meat, I am only getting 10-15 grams of protein at each meal which leaves me quite a bit short of the 60-80 I am supposed to have.  The shakes are supposed to make up the difference but I can't tolerate them so I am looking for an alternative.

Oh sorry.  I just forgot that some programs go slower than others.  (At 2 months I was moving to 4 oz. or 1/2 c. max.)

You would probably need about 100 pills a day.  Not practical.

I tolerated Nectar Fuzzy Navel protein powder and mixed it with an orange sugar free drink mix.

I like treats like Quest Protein Chips and bars.

How far along were you when you were able to eat protein bars?

My center recommended three months, but the quality of Quest bars is much better than what was available in 2007.  If you can get cheese and deli meat down, the Quest bars should be fine.
