hiatal hernia/nausea

So I'm having RNY on 6/6. I scheduled it for summer since I'm a teacher. I'm also having a hiatal hernia repair. However, in the last couple of weeks I am having symptoms that make me think the hernia is getting worse. The hernia is pressing on the sphincter at the bottom of my esophagus and keeps it open. I reflux badly. I take Prilosec twice a day to keep the acid down. Lately, I've started noticing that when I eat I feel extremely full and the food is all the way up in my throat. I feel sick, overly full, and nauseous for a couple of hours before I get any relief. On the one hand, it's keeping my food intake down, which is a good thing, but it's darn uncomfortable.

Has anyone experienced this? I can't really move the surgery up. Do I just grin and bear it for another 3 weeks?

Do you feel like taht with liquids only?

I was on a 4 weeks preop diet. 4-5 shakes and a small dinner..

when I had internal hernia - I used sliders and protein shakes for a couple of weeks...

In worse case - if you can't move the surgery up - I would try more liquid - slider diet...

I feel the bloating with liquids and solid food. I'm not eating much because I'm so uncomfortable. Do you think it's worth trying protein shakes for a while?

I have a call in to my surgeon to see about the possibility of moving the surgery up, but of course he's out until tomorrow.

Have you tried massaging the area? I found it very helpful. I was able to find a youtube video through a google search on how to do it

I would try to movevthevsurgery up.

At the same time - I would make sure I was not constipated. Even with daily BM - sometimes food just stays inside small intestine and does not move...then even the stomach will get "backed up".

When I had hernia (1year post op RNY) food would just "sit there" . Dining liquids most of the day with added fat (i.e. avocado) really helped with the pain . pushing liquids was critical to wash things inside... Walking after meals helped move the "food". Massaging the area...(gently) ...

Avoiding any food that can fermate -causingngas was critical. No raw veggies, or even some cooked ones..

But calling the doc is great idea...if you can move the surgery - great - if not - you need to survive until then.

If anything else - ask if he can recommend any meds for the spasms..

BTW- doing liquid diet - limited calories and qty - is going to make you hungry...I felt I was starving - but hunger was better than the pain the food caused... Hang in there..

I don;t have any ppre-op suggestions for you other than to contact your surgeon.

But I can tell you that my hiatal hernia was repaired during my RNY operation.  Having the heartburn stop was almost as good as losing the weight.  It has been wonderful.  I didn;t realize all the trouble the hernia was causing (I didn't even understand that hiatal meant esophageal - it thought it was lower down until I looked it up on the internet.
