general food questions
I have my RNY tomorrow morning. I have been on liquids for two wks and their booklet from the dr says I will be on phase 2 dietary restrictions when I go home on Friday. The Phase 2 I believe is full liquids to include creamed soups, I think I am understanding this correctly. I bought some just in case. Cant I just puree all my regular soups? Would eggs be included in this phase and omG, I absolutely love salads, how long before I can eat my salads and what is the big deal about pasta? caffeine? and coffee creamer. I found Walden Farms 0 carbs 0 cals 0 sugars regular, sweet cream and flavored coffee creamers at Hy Vee, u think these would be acceptable. Sorry for so many questions. Also, I was just told by a new bariatric patient that they were not permitted to consume anything until 24 hrs after surgery, after their swallow test...not even ice...isnt this kinda cruel? Thanks. Lori
Everyone is different but do not puree regular soups too much carbs in the pasta. I mean you can strain it through a strainer. My favorite tool was one of those mini choppers. I chopped eggs, tuna, ham etc in it.
Salads will come down the road.
Pasta makes alot of ppl having dumping syndrome. I can eat a couple of tablespoons w. no problems but to me its not worth it.
I still do not tolerate scrambled eggs or omelets. Just letting you know.
Good Luck....
Just follow your plan and don't worry about adding new things. This is not Weigh****chers. Your insides will be cut open and put back together. Many things can make you sick as you are healing.
Salads are too rough for most of us the first three months after surgery. Some people can eat eggs, some cannot. Eggs should not be eaten on full liquid phase Throwing up is unpleasant and not good for your newly healing insides.
You may not be allowed coffee, at least I was not. I also was allowed no caffeine, pasta, rice, bread, cereals, potatoes, or other starches.
Because you are starting at a low weight, your loss will probably be much slower than people at a higher weight. You will have to watch your calories to lose down to your goal.
The reason for no food before the leak test is to be sure there are no leaks. Leaks can be life threatening. I was allowed ice chips.
Some surgeons now do the leak test during surgery.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
I went in for my gallbladder a few years ago, and I was pregnant in my first trimester so I wasn't allowed to have surgery for it at the time. I was in the hospital for 3 days and 2 night and I was 8 weeks pregnant. I wasn't allowed anything by mouth the whole time I was there. I got everything through an IV. If I could deal with that while pregnant, not being able to drink for 24 hours will be a cake walk for you.
Plus some places will let you have a wet sponge to moisten your lips if you're overly dry.
When I got to my room the nurse was putting out the little medicine cups and filling them with water - I was to start drinking them 1 every 15 minutes. Later on they added juice to it.
On the second day there was tea on my tray (gross) and woohoo on discharge day (day 3) they gave me coffee (I'm sure it was decaf but that's what I drink anyway).
Follow the plan to be successful! Don't stress about what other say because unless they had the same surgeon at the same hospital their story is likely going to be different than yours!
Good luck.
In addition to the other advice, please check if anything you are thinking of eating contains Xylitol. I was in agony and vomiting for 5 hours less than a week after surgery because of a sugar-free pudding cup that contained Xylitol. It MAY not happen to you, but it's definitely worth waiting to find out. Vomiting that soon after surgery is scary.
