Medications passing through pouch
Hello, I had surgery in 2006 and have noticed that medications have to be taken a certain way for them to work. I didn't notice a problem until I started some sleep medication. If I take my medication with too much water... Meaning more than 1 swallow I notice that I do not get sleepy. I have to take my medication any lie flat in order for it to make me sleepy. I think what is happening is the pill goes right through my pouch. If I lay down it seems to desolve in my stomach pouch. This is the only way for me to get the med to actually work. I don't take my other meds this way because I'm not waiting for it to cause sleepiness, but I want to feel sleepy with my sleep meds so I do what works. Has anyone noticed this happening to them? I made an appointment with my surgeon to discuss this as what I'm finding online discusses certain medication and not meds going right through the pouch.
I do not think drinking too much water will cause you to not fall asleep less quickly. The water helps disolve the medication so it is absorbed into your blood stream. Some people will see a sleep med become less affective over time. You should speak with the doc about the reduced effectiveness of the drug that was prescribed.

My meds work still. For example, I drank a cup with it and finished my dishes and I never got sleepy. The next night I took them with a few sips... Layed down flat right away and I was out quickly. I also sometimes eat a few crackers and that helps sometimes too. I too have had to have higher doses of meds to get a decent level. I have epilepsy and depression.
I just wondered if anyone else noticed this. I sometimes wonder if my stoma is too wide? In the past few years I started to feel starving after only 2 hours. I mean stomach growling and everything. I make sure to each lots of protein and not so much slippery food like yogurt.
I made an appointment with my surgeon just to see if everything is ok. It's been a long time since a follow-up. I'll update after :) could all be in my head.
I noticed that. Taking meds with our without food, makes a huge difference for me.
You still probably absorb the meds - but it may take longer for the to get disolved and absorb.
I take steroids and I learned that I have to take a larger dose if I take it with food. Some meds don't work on me unless I take that subligualy.
