Hi forum.  I had my conversion from lap band to RNY on Monday May 2nd.  I got home from the hospital yesterday and got on the scale last night. I was up 14 lbs!!!!!  I know this is from the fluid I got, but does it hang around a few days?  Are my kidneys not functioning properly?

Also - 1 day post op - 10 pain for 3 hrs inbetween pain meds.  Pain med brought it down to 6. Is that normal too?

Thank you,Mary

I had surgery on Monday as well and am not even going to weigh until next Monday. My hands are swollen and my belly is too, I'm sure I'm carrying 5-10 extra pounds of fluid, so no sense in making myself miserable.

I gained 9 or 10 pounds and it all went away within a week or so. I didn't have a lot of pain that wasn't manageable with the medicine they sent me home with and Tylenol after I quit the prescription meds, so I am not sure about the pain level.  Some people in my support group had a lot of pain especially on their left side. I would check with your doctor and see what they think. It could be gas trying to leave the body. That pain doesn't go away with medicine.

Pretend you are swimming with your arms. It helps release the gas used in surgery. It gets better

I gained about the same when I was in the hospital.  Took a few days to get rid of all of the fluids.  Don't let the pain get ahead of you.  It is much easier to manage the pain proactively instead of trying to chase it.  Take your pills by the clock for the first couple of days, and not when you start feeling bad.  You should not have to endure pain of 10.

I doubt the hospital would have sent you home if your kidneys werent functioning. Before they sent you home, were they tracking your urine output?

They were tracking my urine output. But it really freaked me out to see that number on the scale!  I feel much better now that I know it's not uncommon.  Thank you!
