X-post: how and when do you take your vitamins?
on 4/26/16 4:12 pm
i haven't found any research regarding when the best time of day to take vitamins is, and whether they should be taken with food or on an empty stomach. I found a couple things that were written for non-ops...but since we have changed everything surgically I doubt this applies to us as RNY patients. Has anyone found a reputable source for this information? How and when were you instructed to take your vitamins?
I currently take morning calcium on an empty stomach, multi, biotin, b12, d3, and liquid fish oil just after eating breakfast. Calcium at 2 pm on empty stomach. Multi just after dinner. Calcium on empty stomach two hours later.....

Don't take b-vitamins at night because they can interfere with you sleep. I started off taking my vitamins on an empty stomach, but they have started to upset my stomach more and more. I find that it helps if I take them shortly before eating. They didn't bother me at all initially, so I guess you can develop sensitivities to them. I am going to try the vitamin patch to see if that works well for me.

8 am : Calcium citrate 500/Multi/b12/magnesium citrate
10:30 am: Calcium citrate/magnesium glycinate/dry D3
12:30 pm: Calcium citrate/multi/omega 3/biotin or B-50 complex
4:30: Iron fumerate/vitamin c/magnesium oxide
bedtime: Carbonyl Iron/b6/vitamin C/ and Miralax
reasons: Iron needs to be separated from calcium. I need 1500 mg of calcium citrate per day -- with no more than 500 mg at a time. I need two multis -- Iron absorbs best on an empty stomach --- and vitamin C helps absorption. B6 helps with sleep.

Lots of info regarding when to take vitamins with a quick Google search.
Calcium, via Mayo Clinic: Carbonate should be taken at mealtime, other types don't matter. Split into doses 500mg or less. Take it at a time other than your multi and/or iron supplement, or after an iron-rich meal since iron and calcium don't play well together.
Iron, via the NIH: Take on an empty stomach. Don't take with milk, calcium, antacids, fiber, or caffeine.
B12, via US Office of Dietary Supplements: Don't take with a PPI or metformin.
Multivitamins, via Arizona State U: Take with food.
