Feeding tube

hey everyone, I'm not new to the website but don't post often. Last time I posted it was about a rny revision I was scheduled to have but before I continue if you don't know me here is my story. I'm 27 years old and had rny at celebration hospital in Florida on Dec/2014 a little over a year ago: I developed ulcers shortly after and had an endoscopy done after treatment with carafate and protonix didn't help. I woke up the next day with a perforation and went septic. They repaired the hole but I still had trouble eating and drinking and nausea. They then took my gall bladder out and fixed a hernia. It still didn't take away the pain.

So on February 2 they did a revision. I was still having a hard time swallowing food so they did another endoscopy and I had a structure which they fixed. Even though they fixed it, I still have awful nausea and pain when I eat.

So I have been on TPN for almost three weeks now and canonly take fluids and food by mouth as long as it doesn't cause pain. You would think I would lose weight but each bag of his stuff is 1600 calories so I've gained ten pounds of fluid and I'm not happy about it. Anyway the nausea when I disconnect from the TPN is so bad it disorients me and I take phenergan and zofran for nausea.

Went to see my surgeon today and we decided to do a feeding tube instead of the TPN to see how that works. It's another surgical procedure so I'm afraid but has anyone else had to have a tube put in place? I'm hoping the feeding tube takes away the nausea.

just asking for some love and support. Thanks all.

I can't give any help with the feeding tube, but hoping you get past this, and start feeling better.

Deana,

You have alot going on and I hope it successfully resolves.  I have no experience with these conditions.  I feeding tube seems like a another  major intervention.  Have you thought about getting a second opinion?

I wish I could offer more help, but I will say prayers.

Wow.  I have chronic nausea (Zofran has been a godsend - I hated Phenergan) but nothing, and I mean NOTHING compared to what you're dealing with.

Wish I had answers.  I hope the docs can  help and that the feeding tube helps somehow.   There is no way I'd wish complications from RnY on  my worst enemy.  A friend of mine who was sleeved over two years ago had problems for the first 18 months.  She just recently had her feeding tube removed. It helped her immeasurably while she needed it.

I prayed for you just now and I hope you get better quickly.  If you think about it, please keep us posted.

Did she gain weight with the tube?

You know, actually I don't really know.  She literally had been sick since a couple of days after her VSG so she was in her weight loss phase the whole time she was going through this ordeal.   Of course she lost weight over all and is at her goal now - but transitioning to eating when she lost her feeding tube was really hard for her.  It was painful and she was pretty nauseous too, and not hungry, so it has been a struggle.  She too had started on the TPN and then switched over to the tube.

I would think weight gain during this time - while you're literally trying to save your life - would be a secondary concern.  But I do understand your worry.  Whatever you do gain (if anything at all)  will likely come off quickly once your health settles down.

Take good care of yourself, and please check in when you can.  These complications we run into are no joke.

Ask on the DS forum... I think some people there dealt with that...

Your story could have been written by a lady I met in this 'room' 14 years ago. She went thru hell but in the end, lost the weight and maintained the loss. Fight for your life now and then take care of the weight. Wishing you good health soon
