What complications have you experienced from RNY? Or have you done well?

I am four years out. I had an incisional hernia at about 2 years out with a resulting simple surgical repair. I was chronically anemic before RNY, now I do not absorb iron so I get infusions of Injectifer about every 12-18 months (2 sessions over two weeks). No regrets for me.

Constipation,  gassy both burps and farts.  Dumping probably 4 times since surgery.  Food got stuck once, talk about pain owwww but I was able to walk it off and drink water to help it go down.

The one "complication" that stands out to me is massive weight loss. I'm 8.5 months post op and have had only minor issues in the beginning like dealing with constipation,  or an irritated pouch when I pushed my luck transitioning through the food stages.

A few over the years...fixable.. And some that may be RNY related...or due to multiple surgeries..

RH -reactive hypoglycemia (can be controlled by a diet)

Other issues: Hernias, GB problems, cysts in pancreas, IBS-C, low gut motility due to internal nerves damage...food allergies and itolerances,  severe GERD (did not have that before RNY) ,  iron deficiencies (need periodic iron infusions) ...

Beside all of that - life is great...

I am almost 5 years out and I've had no complications with my surgery. I lost about 90 pounds (I'm 4'11) and I'm off all medications I was taking pre-op and I no longer need to use CPAP. I was 62 when I had my surgery and my only regret is I wish I had done it earlier. I wish you all the best in your journey.

All I can say is I echo the previous replies.  I did have to have my gallbladder removed one month after my surgery, I dump with anything with more than about 7g of sugar or 4g of fat, pooping is an adventure pretty much everyday (either explosive or constipated, no happy medium), my iron is dropping some and my D is tanked, and the excess skin is messing with my body image. None of that is in the least causing me to regret the RNY.  I LOVE the way I feel and I am so thankful to have had the surgery.  I wouldn't change a thing except I wish I had done it sooner. All totally worth it!

I had my surgery 13 years ago with quite a large incision so I have had three hernias....my fault, heavy lifting. My vitamin D tanked, my own fault and anemia, my fault. BUT no regrets, two new knees, life is awesome post op.

No immediate complications, but did develop a large incisional hernia.  I have had it repaired once, but the mesh did not hold and its bigger.   Still, I would do this surgery again in a heartbeat!

Almost 8 weeks post op, I had one complication about a week post op where I had to go back to the hosp. overnight because I had bloody bowel movements.  It turned out to be related to them giving me too much blood thinners and it made the internal cuts kinda weepy and they drained into my digestive tract.  They stopped the lovonox and I got better within a few days.  But, no complications since.  I did have to push the limits on Easter and ate some candy - dumped and felt terrible for about 1.5 hours.  I've lost 30 pounds, but only about 5 of them have been in this last month - I believe it's been a stall, and maybe i've been eating too many carbs, too.  But, I'm happy I did it!
