crystal light and heartburn, is there any connection?
I don't usually have issues with reflux or heartburn, but last night I got a pretty nasty case of heartburn. It was after eating a little off plan and I chalked it up to fried food and carbs, etc. Well, just now I got an intense, almost debilitating case of heartburn. I scrambled to find relief, and thank goodness we had a bottle of Tums here in the office (which worked immediately).
The only thing that I can attribute to both instances is that I had some Crystal Light Raspberry Ice to drink. Today I've eaten on plan 100%. I just recently started drinking crystal light again after months of just drinking lightly flavored water, so I'm thinking that may have done it. It was very, very bad heartburn. The kind that makes you want to curl up and rock, it's was so much ick and pain in my chest and throat. I also kinda have a weird headache that seems to come along with it, and an ache in my back a bit still. It's really weird.
Has anyone ever had heartburn caused by something as mundane as Crystal Light? I think I'm going to start taking my PPI again, just in case, but it is so weird that this popped up two days in a row and honestly the only thing that I can say for sure both times was drinking that stuff.
Thoughts?
Holy hell, the tums wore off and the heartburn is back and it's BAD!
I looked at the ingredients for another flavor of crystal light and it Maltodextrin as the second ingredient. is this considered sugar alcohol? Also, first ingredient of this one is Citric Acid, could it be just the acid from the drink? OMG, this sucks!

yes to all your questions. I can't use crystal light anymore.
You may have developed an allergy to anything in that stuff.
I react to very very small amount of fillers in some meds. The amount is super small...but when I take The meds - I end up with 3 days heartburn..

I had heart burn all evening, it was really bad. I was chomping tums like candy for a bit, ugggh.
Anyway, I searched high and low and for the life of me couldn't find my prescription bottle with the omeprazole in it. I had given up all hope and expected to have to run and get some over the counter this morning, but right before I was going to bed I remembered my big beautiful Coach Dragonfly tote that I had used about a month and a half ago, so I checked and there it was!
I slept like **** last night, and skipped the gym because of it, but so far today I'm feeling pretty good. I may have to call my PCP if I'm finding this to be a common thing. I've also backed off of the Crystal Light for a while.
I came across this forum searching for answers to the Crystal Light / acid reflux question. For me the answer is a definite yes. My wife and I have been drinking Crystal Light Decaf Ice Tea for several months. Recently I've been waking up at night with heartburn. After eliminating food items from my diet I finally had a discomfort-free night after cutting out the Crystal Light. And it turns out I was making my problem even worse by drinking more Crystal Light during late night runs to the fridge, in an effort to "cool down" my heartburn. Where water usually helps, Crystal Light definitely did not. Surprisingly even diluting the drink with more water didn't solve the reflux problem (I find CL way too sweet when made according to the instructions).
I attribute the problem to two things (and these are only theories of mine). First, the high citric acid content of Crystal Light. Second (again, a theory), there are ingredients in CL which seem to change the texture of water, making it more "slippery" and "chuggable". What makes CL go down so easily, IMO, may also make it "come up" just as easy, along with additional acid from your stomach.
Hoping for a lot less heartburn in the future by drinking real decaf ice tea and good old water.
