I'm positive I am not the only RNYer whose every step is jet propelled. Not only is the expellsion of gas embarrassing and socially unacceptable, the internal buildup is painful. What can be done about this?

What about Been-o? I am not sure if we can take it, but I hear it works.  Maybe that?

I don't have a lot of gas (although what little I do have will clear a room!) But I read on here about devrom. I got it for my brother,  who had the DS and gas so nasty we couldn't stand to be around him.  He took it as a gag gift,  but his wife called thanking me!  It reduced his gas,  but even better,  when he did let one rip,  NO SMELL!

The most common reason for excess gas is too many carbs. The next biggest reason is a specific food that disagrees with you. Sugar alcohols will do this every time.

Take a close look at your diet and see what the culprit could be. You can try treating the symptoms, but eliminating the cause works better.

Too many carbs will definitely do it. I was away this weekend eating foods I don't normally...and I had to back into a corner sometimes away from people to let it go...hahaha...didn't want to kill them.

Probiotics I find do help as well. If you take one and it is not helping, switch to a different one.

I've been taking this one: Probiotic   which someone on here turned me on to. I take one a day. It works the best of any I have taken.

Thank you for your responses.  However, I'm on chemo for breast cancer.  Being on chemo I've been struggling just eating anything. When I do eat I go first for dense protein. I'm barely eating any carbs so that is not my cause.  BTW,  chemo is not the cause of my gas.  I was gassy before chemo.

If you are taking chewable vitamins check the labels for maltitol, sorbital or other sugar alcohols.  My culprit was Celebrate vitamins.

Other sugarfree products like gum, drinks, candy and mints will have sugar alcohols.

I always carry Gas-x.  The other trick I learned sounds too easy and simple, but if you get your head to the level of your knees the gas will come out with no sound or smell.  I bend over and tie or adjust my shoes.  it only takes a second or so.

LOL...the visual I have of me bending over to tie my shoes, etc. is funny.  I'd be walking around stooped over all day.  Thank you for your suggestions.  I will check my Centrum chewable vitamins for a possible culprit.

We were just talking about this at my WLS support group.  Several people mentioned that they had narrowed down the culprit to Splenda (sucralose) which is in tons of sugar free products (it upsets my tummy too).  Others said Nutrasweet (aspartame) caused them gas problems (whereas that's one of the fake sweeteners that's ok with me).

A lot of products that contain one of these ALSO contain aculfesame potassium (not sure of spelling!) which is another possible cause.

So you might try switching sweeteners to see if things improve.

Another frequent cause is lactose, the sugar that is naturally occuring in milk and all dairy products.  Many RNY-ers become lactose intolerant after surgery.  You could try lactose-free versions of milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc, or switch to soy or nut-based products to see if this helps.

Also as someone else already mentioned, sugar alcohols of all kinds, even erythritol, are triggers for many RNY-ers.
