Gall Bladder Removal

Would it be too much to ask my surgeon to remove my gall bladder during my RNY surgery?  I haven't had any issues with it, but my mother had to have hers removed (non WLS related) and it seems like so many post op people have gall stone issues.  Just wondered if anyone requested this from their doctor.

I have heard that some programs will do this.  But every surgeon is different.

I have had any problems with my GB, until it went "bad" 8 weeks after my RNY.  I had the stones before, but never any symptoms I guess.  So my galbladder was yanked almost exactly 8 weeks after my RNY.

I'm 18 months out from RNY today, and I had my gallbladder out 6 days ago.  I can understand the desire to get it out of the way if it needs to be done anyway, but there's no guarantee that it'll go bad.  I understand the desire to avoid an attack (I was lucky enough to have mine go bad without giving me an attack), but if it's currently healthy, I'd leave it.  It could be months, it could be years, or it could never go bad.

Every doc is different, but I know mine says he won't yank it unless it is medically indicated...

I think I knew the answer, I just hoped it would be different. It never hurts to try...right?

Hello,

I actually never had any problems with my gallbladder. And on the day before surgery I was sent to ultrasound, because gall stones is supposed to be as side effect of obesity. The found 2 big stones and suggested to take the gallbladder out. I thought about it for 5 minutes and gave it a go. After surgery my doctor told me, that the gallbladder itself looked really bad and could not believe that I never had any symptoms.....

Only after did I read in this forum of all the people with problems and surgery etc.

I am so glad that found out before and its now taken care of.

Long story short, ask your doctor to do a test and if he thinks its feasible have them removed. Just one less problem down the road!
