What's On Your Monday Menu, RNYers?

You guys, can I ask for some encouragement/words of wisdom from you all? I think I've mentioned I'm having a horrible acid problem (my surgeon told me that my acid level is 409% greater than normal).  I can't decide what to do. I can have a non-surgical procedure (currently fighting about insurance coverage but that's another issue) which will help but, according to my surgeon, likely won't cure my problem) or convert to bypass. Other than my acid, I have a perfect sleeve, I have great restriction, and ZERO food issues. I can eat everything. I read all the posts here and it seems like a bunch of you have food intolerances. AV and her milk, Melissa and her meat, Susan has bad pouch days. I know there are more I'm forgetting off the top of my head. Anyway, I don't know what to do.

My surgeon told me that if my endoscopy shows damage he's making the decision and I'll likely have to bypass. I'm so nervous you guys.  I know I have to do what's best for my health, but I'm so afraid of giving up my sleeve which has served me so well. I DONT want another surgery. Can any of you talk me off the ledge?

Stacy,

I had horrible acid reflux before my bypass, I took prilosec twice a day and some days it just didn't work, I used to get a bad cough, which for years I thought was sinus drip until I saw an ear nose and throat guy and he told me it was more likely my acid reflux causing it.   I used to clear my throat constantly.   I had my bypass April 20, 2015 and have had absolutely no acid reflux since then.  I have had no problems with milk or dense proteins as some do and I do not have a "fussy" pouch.  I no longer clear my throat constantly either.

I hope this helps you out a bit.

Thank you!  I had no acid problems before VSG but now it's horrible. I know I should be happy that there's a solution, but I'm sooo nervous. Hearing stories like yours helps me though!

So sorry you might have to make a tough decision. I think you have to list all pros/cons and if you trust your surgeon (which I think you do) decide together what is best for you in the end.

Hey chica, that must be scary :(  I am sorry you are suffering with terrible acid.

My RNY has served me well - I have zero intolerances and every time I have been sick with the foamies, it is my own fault (dry leftover meat or just too much).  I have zero intolerances to dairy and I freaking wish that I dumped!  Nope, sugar gets along with me just fine.  I don't know if this helps you off the ledge, but know that there are tons and tons of us out there whose RNY pouches are perfectly fine and small and help keep us in line :)

Good luck!!!

That's a tough spot.  I know I complain about my new milk intolerance, but really, it's not even a blip on the radar.  No milk?  So what?  LOL  Sugar alcohols make me want to die?  Then I just don't eat them.

Seriously, if those things are my only issues, I consider myself a success story!  I really can eat pretty much anything I want.

I am so sorry!  I want to tell you not to worry about my stupid meat problems, because I am NOT the "norm"...but I can see how this would make you nervous.  (((HUGS))))

Don't panic.... You say you have a perfect sleeve...except... It is a big 'except' --the damage the acid can do to your esophagus over time is not good...

As much as we have to 'learn' our pouches, I think most of us do not regret having RNY. Will there be an adjustment if you end up doing it? Yes... but you can do it!

Wait for the endoscopy... if you trust your surgeon, you need to trust him.

Thank you all so much.  It really does help.  I trust my surgeon completely.  We were both leaning towards the non-surgical procedure, but at my appointment on Friday, he came in the room and the first thing he said was "I think I'm steering you wrong."  In my heart, I know what I have to do, but I just can't pull the trigger.  If my endoscopy shows damage, it will be easier to accept, because then it's out of my hands.  If no damage, I have a tough decision. . . try the non-surgical approach and stay on PPIs or convert.  So much to think about, but having you all as a sounding board is helpful and comforting.  Thank you!

You will figure it out...
I want to add, when ever I have had foamies and things...it was always my fault...too dry, ate too fast etc... you learn quickly.
