Can I really only expect to lose 60-80% of excess weight

trying to get insurance approval for a revision from band to rny or sleeve. I was able to lose 100 lbs with my band and maintain for 6.5 years until my band crapped out..... Anyway I have been trying to do the research and decide which surgery is right for me and I was wondering

how accurate are the studies that say with rny I can expect to lose 60-80% of my excess weight? I'm hoping to lose 100% of my excess weight and reach a normal bmi

thanks for your answers guys

No- if you hang out on this board, you will see people that have lost 100 % and KEEP it off!

I'm planning on 100% and have 53 left.

This is "in general"...Each person is different.  No matter what people say here, it can be shot down...So I'll just try and give you general information.  In general younger women and men lose the weight the quickest.  You take the same woman at 30 vs  50...She has more energy (in general), can move more at 30 so the weight comes off more quickly.  Men have a larger muscle structure than women...It doesn't mean they (or the woman at 30 years of age) will keep and follow their diet.  But for RNY weigh loss those two groups lose the weight the fastest.  It also does not mean in any way they will keep off the weight.

You can reach goal with both the sleeve and RNY.  After the honeymoon time period, the real work begins.  The good (or bad) patterns you have put into place take over...And can and will help you along the way to goal or a near goal weight.  The problem arises with usually simple carbs...They are the Devil and will get you if you don't stay clear of them.  Things like birthday parties, special dinners, holidays, ect....You know the stuff (with the band) come into play.  You have to have a change of mindset to help this "tool" you've been given.

Also a commonsense exercise program will help to get to goal.  You need to find what works for you in that area.  My program is not yours...Yours is not mine.

So without further info concerning your general health, I would say yes, you can reach goal...But you need to put in the effort.  Your bariatric surgeon can help you choose the surgery that is right for you and your issues.  Brian

Thanks Brian,

I am 38 and pretty high energy, I am relatively healthy and I hope that if my insurance is approved I will chose the right surgery for me. My surgeon prefers the rny and let's you know that right up front, it's his expertise and sees better things from rny patients. I was initially terrified of the rny but the more I read and talk to my surgeon, the more I feel like this may be the best option, so while I battle it out with insurance to get this thing out.... I read all of the boards everyday gathering all of the insight I can . Thank you for your info !!

Bye the way...I reached goal in 6 months and 10 days...Worked really hard (no sugar at all)...A lot of exercise.  From a high of 300, day of surgery 272 to 190...I even got down to 187.  9+ years out and the last time I weighed I was 212-213.  So yes, there was regain.  I am in that group of 60-80%.  But I am active (a lot of energy) and things like my blood work are good.  You can look at my photos on my profile and see my progress/regression.  I would have someone take a photo of myself every year on my surgery anniversary...For new people to see what is really there...The good and bad...Gain and reloss.  Over the years (post RNY), I've gotten to a high of about 235 and a low of 205 after staying near goal the first year.  I would be called a success.  Maybe not in others eyes...But in my surgeon's, PCP's, and myself I think I am.  Brian

I had the same fear when I was waiting for surgery.

I'm 49 and have lost and kept off 100%. My starting BMI was 53 and now it's 21.

I lost it all with my band to bypass revision in about 7 months. Now can I keep it off?? I am working my ass off (literally) to stay below goal. There are great role models around here to help keep me on track!
