3 weeks post op soft food questions.
Hi All. At 2 weeks I was approved to move on to soft foods. I can only have 1 shake if needed. No drinking 30 min before or after a meal. 64 oz fluid and 60g protein. I never feel hungry, I never feel full. I have felt full maybe 3 times in 3 weeks. My paperwork says to start off limiting to 1/4 cup of food per meal and work up to a cup by 3 months+. I have yet, since day one, been able to get in all of my water and protein. I can however eat more than 1/4 cup, but I'm afraid to eat much more. I do measure and limit myself to 1/4 cup and maybe just a bit more. I am constantly sipping my water too. I'm to the point that I am over shakes. I could only drink 4oz of my shake the last few days. I'm suppose to eat only 3 meals. If I can only get around 6 to 10 protein a meal, how in the world can I get 60g???? I end up eating 4 to 6 times to get as much protein as possible, but still do not get near 60. Opinions? Since Feb 19th, I have lost about 30lbs.
Example day:
Water 3 oz
BF: 1/2 HB Egg (Sometimes with a bit of mayo, sometimes not) *Today I didn't have mayo, but did try a piece of turkey bacon (Protein=4)
Water 4oz
LUNCH: 1/4 cup low fat turkey chili w/ cheese OR 1/4 cup of fajita chicken ....I average 6g protein
Water 4 oz
SNACK: half of a light and fit yogurt (6 protein)
Water 6oz
(Sometimes I will finish any left over from my lunch if I had more than 1/4 cup)
Water 2oz (Notice, by the end of my work day I have only had almost 1 20oz bottle of water)
DINNER: Turkey/Avacado/cheese rollup OR Same as lunch OR 2 oz Grilled Chicken with 1/8 cup cottage cheese...(try for 10g protein)
Water 4 oz
SNACK: the other half of the yogurt (6 protein) or Cottage Cheese
Water 4 oz
Water and protein are both normally 40 something grams each.
Thank You!
What kind of shakes are you having. Is there a different one you can try? That will really help with your protein this soon after surgery.
It sounds like you are doing a good job with the protein foods.
If you are able to eat more than 1/4 cup and are not meeting your protein needs, you might want to do a bit more, if that's OK with your surgeon's plan. i.e. move up to 1/3 cup or 1/2 cup.
My dietician told me that it's really important to get that 60g protein in. She said the body will start using muscle mass for it's protein needs if the protein in the blood gets too low. It's important to maintain as much muscle as possible to keep your metabolism as high as possible.
I was on two Premier Protein shakes a day (30g protein per shake) after surgery. I'm still doing one per day (4 weeks out) to meet my protein needs, because I cannot get enough protein in with solid food yet otherwise.
Thank you! I am using unjury chocolate splendor and unjury chicken. I just ran out of the chicken. I used Premier RTD chocolate yesterday but was only able to drink 4oz. I'm not giving up. I will keep using them, but I know at my 6 week appointment they highly stress to remove shakes as a source of nutrition. I don't have any issues eating 1/3 of a cup. I have been too afraid to pu**** any further being that I don't really feel anything. However, I don't want to loose muscle mass either!!! :)
I am 13 days post op. I started soft mushie foods. I am supposed to supplement with shakes to get up to the protein
I like you feel nothing. No hunger no fullness no nothing. But I stick to the directions and off I go.
I drink all the time except before and after the meal. Just had 1/4 cup of ricotta bake with pesto.
Still working through Things in my brain - that wee two oz of food is going to kee me satisfied ??? But somehow it does.
I have no advice but wanted you to know I am in the same boat with no feeling. My guess is Nerves have to reconnect

Make some pudding from your Premier Shakes... it's so good.
Just don't do the base yet.. though it gets softer the second day it's not quite soft enough the first day.
