Condiments
I've never been a plain jane person when it comes to food. I was hoping some of you could tell me your experiences with condiments. How do you react to marinades, bbq sauces, low fat mayos and miracle whips, and ketchup? Are they all ok to use in small quantities? I plan to eat a diet of mostly meat. Would it be best to make sure these items are all purchased in low fat and sugar free?
I used them sparingly, but I do use them. They make a reduced sugar ketchup, and I use yellow mustard freely. I do use BBQ sauce, but I always log it for calories and sugar. You have to be careful about marinades and dressings because they are usually really high in calories and sugar.
Personally I think they can be worked in, but you have to be very mindful of the amount used and which brands will fit into your plan.
I use real mayo, not Low fat. I use reduced sugar ketchup - but I just started using it a month or so ago. It helps me get MORE food - meats in.
I used yellow and other mustards, except honey mustard - too many sugars.
I prefer to avoid sugars- but not fats. But too much fats -and I may get nauseated and even sick... so I know by now (app 8 reas postop) how much fat and what type of fats are ok for me..

^^^ Almost exactly what Hala said. I use reduced sugar ketchup or make my own. I make my own ****tail sauce. I don't use BBQ or terriaki due to the high sugar -- but I use full fat mayo, sour cream, dressings. I use lots of mustards and horseradishes.
I avoid sugars but welcome reasonable fats.

I use regular mayo as low fat versions tend to have sugar added. I also need some fat and the small amount I use adds very few calories. I do track them in my food for the day. Be careful with both BBQ sauce and marinade as they can have quite a bit of sugar so be sure to read labels. One of the first times I dumped was on a BBQ meatball. I knew as soon as I tasted it it was way too sweet for me. It only took one to leave me miserable for 45 minutes! Now I am leery of eating anything sauced when I am out. You just never really know what is in there unless you make it yourself or actually see a label!
I try to stay away from condiments, but if I use any it is Olive Oil Mayo, Mustard and for BBQ, very low sugar sauce and use it sparingly. As for marinades, since most are high in sugar and I still dump, my boyfriend makes a lot of olive oil based marinades and adds seasonings to it, lime, dill, garlic, cumin, etc. I love Mediterranean and we do chicken a lot, so it goes well.
If you do decide to purchase any, check fat and sugar content, some that say low fat/sugar aren't or at least low enough that you won't dump.
Good luck :)

Thank you everyone! This was truly helpful!! My last question on this subject would be about sugar substatutes. Are their any that are good for us to use? Like truvia, splenda?
