As long as you are moving forwards it counts. I wish I could outright run but I have knee replacements so that is a big no no. I do cheat and do a slow jog with Lily when she is feeling energetic. I would love to be able to be fast enough to do a half marathon but most around us have a time limit and Im not sure I could finish that fast at my pace. I have the stamina for it just not the knees to do the pace I need! But at least I don't get out of breath going down my basement steps anymore!

I wouldn't even consider regular running...not good for my joints

My suggestion is to run slooooow  (slower than walking) but try to stay in runners form for as long as you can. It is super hard at first, and you'll want to puke, but you can train your body pretty quickly to prefer the running gait. Then you can work on getting faster!
