Protein/water ratio
on 3/24/16 5:53 pm
I am 15 days out and struggling to meet my water and protein needs. I just can't seem to fit it all in. My surgeon said to make sure my protein isn't too thick to make it easier to get down. Currently I am using a half scoop of syntrax nectar in 16 oz water. I pour it into a smaller cup loaded with ice which waters it down further What has been everyone's experience at only two weeks out? Should I be going even thinner?
ps I have lost only one pound over five days and I think it may be due to me not meeting these goals every day..

I didn't start to lose anything until about 2 weeks out, and then suddenly the next day it was like BAM! Down 10 pounds. I haven't found the syntrax to be too thick, I'd up it to a full scoop and see how that goes. You've gotta get the protein in. It is very time consuming at first, I swear there were days when I sipped all day and it felt like the amt. in the cup never went down. I'd take 2 sips, get that full feeling, have to wait a minute, take 2 more sips, wait, repeat all day long. Now, at just over 3 weeks I can get 3 sips in before that full feeling hits. Hang in there it does get easier!!

Thank you! So you think it's not that I make it too thick, but that it's just the normal struggle to get it all in that everyone has?

I think it's just normal. You'll just go one sip at a time. By watering it down more, I think it makes it harder to get all the protein in. I think a 1/2 scoop is like 12 grams of protein. You'd need to drink 5 of those a day. You'd be getting 80 oz. of water with that, and at this point, I think 64 oz. is about all we can handle. In a week or two, it'll get easier.

I went into a plateau one week after surgery and it lasted 3 1/2 weeks... not everybody loses quick right out of the gate, but it will happen.
How many grams of protein are you getting in, and how many ounces of fluids?
Are you only on protein shakes? and food yet? How are you mixing the protein, Blender? Shaker bottle? stirring?
Personally I think less volume is better. I would mix 1/2 scoop in 16oz and just stir it with a fork... let it sit and stir on and off until it really dissolves. forge****ering it even more with the ice. If you use a blender it can make it thicker and foamier.
Have you tried Premier protein? or any other Ready-to-Drink proteins? Sometimes they are easier because they are thinner to start and no blending involved. You don't have to drink such huge quantity to get your protein in. Premier can be bought at Walmart, Sams, Costco, BJ's... and I know GNC has lean shake people like too....
A protein drink is a meal, you shouldn't be sipping it over hours it should be a size you can finish in 30-45 minutes.
If needed set a timer or write yourself a schedule to keep track of getting everything in. You can do this...

Sadly much of your advice doesn't agree with what my surgeon wants (although I greatly appreciate your response )..he says only protein powder mixed only with water 50 grams/day. Says to continuously sip throughout the day. My meals are actual food to be eaten over 15-20 mins. Soft protein stage, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, tuna, other flaky fish, beans. I had beans the first day but not since. Been eggs or fish each meal since- about an ounce each time
it amazes me all the different diet paths and food progressions postop that I've encountered!
edit to add: I pu****er in a shaker bottle, add half scoop to top. Use a spoon to stir vigorously. Then it sits in that shaker bottle until I need to put some more into my little cup with ice. I don't shake the heck out of it I just swirl the little mixing ball around a few times.

I'm 4 days out and my diet is extremely different from yours. I am to continue to remain on the liquid diet for 4-6 more weeks, then purreed stage will be after that. Currently, I need to consume 60-80 grams of protein and 64oz of liquid in a day (meals are to consist of protein shakes which shakes and soups also count as liquids). I've already lost 6lbs since monday. I was told that long term, the last thing you want to do is sip on protein or snack on protein items all day long. Meals and snacks should take around 30 mins to complete and schedule of 3 meals and 2 snacks should be followed. Eventually, sipping protein all day can be considered "grazing" ( like all day snacking) and we'll up our chances of gaining all the weight back.
Its weird to me how doctor's orders vary. I dont feel anywhere near ready to put regular food in me. Everything gives me a gurgly gut and I work on sipping through that. Good luck to you and I hope you start to see the scale move!

That's such a different progression! My guidelines are 3 meals a day only. No snacks. The protein supplement only continues until month 3, then I should be getting everything I need from food. Doc says no snacks just 3 meals a day--the grazing thing defeats the purpose of the pouch. Also-- his instructions clearly state the protein is NOT a meal replacement, it's a supplement to actual food intake...
My diet was like this:
day 1-7 clear sf liquids only
day 8-9 full liquids (cream soups etc)
day 10- soft protein as mentioned before
one month - add well cooked veg and skinless fruit
month 2- raw veg, month 3 can drink coffee again

I say this all the time- it amazes me that we have so many different guidelines
Me- Day 1 clear liquid
Day 2- full liquids
Day 10 - will be soft food for 3 months.
60-90 grams of protein per day
no fewer than 64 oz of fluid.
*** i can sip my water for hours on end, every 30-40 seconds and never get a full or feeling of discomfort.
I have had no discomfort whatsoever... of course i go straight to- my pouch is too big, this wont work!
on the flip side- something is working - i am down 11 lbs , losing about a pound a day.
