Flushing or Hot Flashes
on 3/23/16 6:09 am
So, yay for me! I got my RNY surgery done on Monday the 21st. I was doing so well, but when I got home I got a tremendous flushing or hot flash. It's just kind of hung around, making me miserable. I called the dr and he recommended Benedryl, so I sipped some of that and feel a bit better, but the hot flashes are sticking around, even though my temp is only 98.8.
Anyone else have anything like that happen?
YES YES YES ME too
it was so weird! I took a benedryl pill (they are tiny) and they went away after that but i had it for about 24 hours total i think It happened after the last shot of lovenox- the blood thinner.
i have my posts op on monday so i am going to ask about it again

Yep... I'm 13 months out and still experience hot flashes, especially when I drink cold water, or have that one bite too many. Happens every time. They are adjusting my thyroid meds, so maybe it will be better controlled soon, but I have definitely had trouble regulating my temperature since the day of surgery. Hope it gets better for you soon.
Yes, I had the hot flashes, cold sweats, for about the first 10 days to 2 weeks after surgery. I think it was the hormones going wacky and probably recovery from the anesthesia too. I'm not having any problems with it now - 3 weeks out.

Thank you for the responses, ladies! Made me feel better to know I'm not alone with those stinky hot flashes.
This happens to men too...When you get the RNY surgery, your fat cerlls contain A LOT of estrogen so causes almost a menopausal like feeling. Thankfully it doesn't last to long. Mine maybe 4 months and some men I know maybe 1-3 months?? (Some don't get it all some a bit longer) If it is SUNNY where you live take a sun bath (lay out in the sun for 10-15 minutes) this can help. Hope this helps. This is what my surgeon told me 6 years ago.
Warmly,
Jackie
