Whiplash & in pain - what can I take?

I wouldn't wait until Monday.  Go to a doc in the box, if your doc can't get you in sooner.  Tramadol will work without making you drowsy, and you may need a steroid of some sort to deal with inflammation.  There's no point to living with pain when it can be fixed!

I agree with not waiting but I would say no to the doc in the box. They are so reluctant to prescribe any pain meds.

Mute..call your doctor. Let them know your pain is NOT being helped with the meds you are on.

Also what about flexiril(sp?).

Tramadol (marketed as Ultram, and as generics) is an opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain.

it is a narcotic. Just not a very strong one.

This will sound crunchy, but you might also try peppermint oil applied topically several times a day. That with copaiba is a relatively strong analgesic applied topically. No, it's not like a true pain medicine or muscle relaxer, but it's pretty darn good.

You can get those from a health food store, or a Young Living or Doterra distributor.

Hope you feel better quickly!

It doesn't matter how NSAIDS are administered. They are systemic, and can have the same exact adverse effects.

Interesting. My bariatric doctor approved it.

I have had a lot of neck/shoulder pain in the past related to pinched/inflamed nerves near the base of my skull.  From everything you described, I think this is a strong possibility for you, and an xray would not really show it.  If it is nerve pain going on, then pain killers will not help much at all.  (That is one clue that it might be nerve pain--also the shoulder pain.)  The TENS and heat can help but not take it all away.

I am all for chiropractors for the right need.  A chiropractor can align things.  BUT!  If the nerves are inflamed, then the chiro adjustments could make things worse.  I speak from experience!  I would definitely see a doctor before the chiro.  You might want to get an MRI to be sure about the nerve pain.

If it is inflamed/pinched nerves, then sometimes they just get better on their own, but physical therapy can help.  Also, consider injections into the inflamed nerve to calm it and allow it to heal.

I fell backward on an icy sidewalk. The only thing that seemed to make the neck pain go away was a day or two of time.  It did not leave gradually--one moment, pain was as bad as the onset and then one moment later completely gone.
