Any VSG Revisions to RNY because of Reflux and Herniation? Please advise
I had reflux for ages before VSG and knew that VSG had the potential to make it worse (or better, or the same) -- and opted for VSG, since the thinking was that my reflux was well controlled with PPI - but at 2X the maximum dosage daily. So, three years later, I've had a little regain (not enough to justify a revision on its own) but I have a significant herniation and increasing reflux. So with the concerns over long-term PPI use, the herniation and the worsening reflux, it seems a revision to RNY is in my future.
Has anyone had a revision because of reflux issues, and if so, what was the outcome? Did the RNY "cure" your reflux -- and how far out are you?
Thanks!
I don't have any experience personally with this, other than the fact that when I was banded I had terrible reflux, and because of this am choosing to go with RNY. Your experience confirms for me that my decision is the right one. Best of luck!

I had the old VBG surgery in 1986. I suffered with SEVERE GERD for 25 years. I developed Barrett's Esophagus and had 6 pre-cancerous lesions removed. I was revised to RNY in 2010 and woke up from the surgery GERD free. I have not had a reflux episode since surgery. It truly was a cure for me.
No. I haven't revised, but it's currently on the table. I'm 22 months post VSG and developed horrible reflux post surgery. Also, I've had a reoccurrence of a hiatal hernia (very small). I'm currently on protonix 40mg/dexilant 60mg/zantac 150-300mg per day and my reflux remains uncontrolled. My surgeon explained how the surgery will resolve my reflux and it makes perfect sense to me. But I'm trying to exhaust my non-surgical options before taking the ultimate step to revision. Currently I'm fighting my insurance company for approval for the Stretta procedure. If I don't get approval, I'll likely go ahead and cash pay for the procedure as I want to avoid a revision surgery that has a greater risk for complications, both during and after. My surgeon told me I likely wouldn't lose a significant amount of weight (but I'm only 6 lbs from my goal/have surpassed his goal), so I'm not revising for additional weight loss.
Sorry this didn't actually answer your question. Hope you get relief soon! If your reflux is like mine, I know how draining it is.
