How much should I be eating at a time one month post op?
I'm wondering how much I should be eating at each meal now that I'm one month post op. I'm still not eating very much which makes it hard to get 60 grams of protein in per day. Should I be trying to eat a little more at each meal? I worry constantly about stretching my pouch!
Thank you! I know I'm probably dumb to worry so much, but the sample menu I got from the surgeon shows breakfast of an egg and 2 ounces of yogurt or cottage cheese and bites of toast. There is no way I can eat that much. I can barely handle the 2 ounces of yogurt no less the egg or toast! I'm going to just relax and give myself more time. I just don't want to increase the odds of losing my hair by not meeting my protein requirements! LOL

My surgeon also had toast on my menu too but I listened to the smart vets like White Dove here and stayed away from processed carbs. At about 4 years out I still avoid pasta, rice, bread and tortillas. The only starch I have added is steel cut oats and that was added when I got to maintenance. If they made me crave other carbs I would ditch them too! Of courselves my surgeons office was ready for me to stop losing at my 6 month post op weight and told me I would not be a normal bmi. I started at 272 at 5 feet 6.5 inches and today 31/2 years later I weigh about 122. And yes that is a normal bmi! I've been this weight now for almost 3 years thanks to the vets and the accountability I find here at OH! Thank you all for that!
The protein requirement is there for much more important reasons than hair loss, such as healing post-surgery, and maintaining as much muscle mass as possible while you lose weight.
I'm 10 days post-op and I find it extremely difficult to get in enough food to meet my protein requirements. I'm still averaging 2 Premier Protein shakes a day.
For breakfast, I can get down one egg, if I'm lucky. I got 1.5 in one day and I had some discomfort, so I won't push myself like that again. The only way I can get the egg down is if I chew it really well (20-30 chews per small bite) and wait about a minute before taking another bite. Some days, I get cramps if I try to eat eggs, so I just have a protein shake instead.
I'm five weeks out now and am able to get a bit more food down, but still nowhere near what the sample menus in my weight loss binder have listed. I have had no dumping, no nausea and feel great so I'm just going to assume I'm doing ok. I'll have blood work done at my six week check up and will have a better idea if I'm lacking in any nutrients I suppose!

Throw those menus out! I can barely eat one egg with 1 ounce of cheese and a deli slice of ham now. Not only is the toast unnecessary, but what a strange combination. The sample menus I received suggested 4 oz of tilapia with a vegetable and 1/2 of rice as one of the meals! I think they just steal the menus from the diabetes education materials.

The sample menus I received in my weight loss manual are way more food than I can eat too! That is why I have wondered how much I should be eating! LOL
