Questions about reactive hypoglycemia
Hi fellow RNY'ers
I am practicing what I preach and have placed a call to my PCP. That being said, has this happen to any of you? I am over 10 years out.
From time to time I would show the signs of reactive hypoglycemia and take appropriate actions. In the last few weeks I am having more and more of these episodes with no warning signs. We are talking 41, and today as low as 31. What has me confused is I have not changed my eating habits and not having those early warning signs scare me. Shaky, sweating, confused. OK, OK, no comments from the peanut gallery about how often I am confused
Have any of you found after years of this not being an issue all of the sudden without explanation it's becoming a real problem?
Thanks,
Kathy

What did you eat before these incidents, and how long before? More information please.

That is what is strange, it's not one common thing... For example this morning I ate no fat greek yogurt, blueberries and some muesli around 7:30 am. I had some string cheese and a hard boiled egg for a snack then a roast beef around 9:30, mustard no sugar added pickle roll up for lunch 11:00ish. The attack came around 11:30 give or take a few mins.
Two days ago it happened when I had eaten 2 scrambled eggs and a diced tomatoes, protein drink, 4 ounces of roasted chicken and carrots. I try to eat every 2-3 hours!
I log my food always... Has this happened to you?

The only times it has happened Was because I ate crap, and had complete control over it. Never when I was eating right.
Besides seeing the doc, I would start from scratch. 100% protein for a few meals. Then add things back one at a time, and watch for a reaction. You might find the culprit. Or you might find it's some other medical thing. Or just random.
Keep us posted.

I deal with RH and hypoglycemia for a long time..
Carbs and proteins require insulin to process. Yes- lean proteins - need a lot of insulin. Google "food insulin index"
so let's see what happened in your body:
no fat greek yogurt, blueberries and some muesli around 7:30 am. = mostly proteins and carbs - a lot of carbs. Very little fat - that would cause a high raise in BS and a lot of insulin to be released... Bu the time you were ready to eat again: Your BS was already dropping - and you added more proteins, more proteins,,.,causing more insulin to be released but you did not added any carbs to counteract the dropping BS... You crashed. Badly...
Another day - was proteins and proteins very little carbs - so when your body dumped the insulin - there was nothing there to help to bring it back...I doubt you ate many carrots.
Lean - low fat protein drinks always made me crash. Whey is absorbed very rapidly and it causes insulin spike...even in normal people... It is recommended for diabetics because it would help them lower their BS...and if yu had taht mixed with skim milk.. ugh.. proteins and sugars are the worst combination...
I need to make sure i eat proteins with fat and some veggies... or nuts...
Are you trying to 'get back on track" and limit fat and have a lot of proteins... ???
when you go to your doc make sure they check a few things:
fasting insulin - to make sure you are not facing insulinoma...
And a second - is ..cortisol... Yu suffered a loss and you may deal with adrenal deficiency... adrenal fatigue.. Our body need the cortisol to balance BS. If we are depleted - sugar crashes would follow... I know... And the more you will try to diet - the worst your crashes would be.. and that will stress the adrenals even more..

Hi H.a.l.a,
I had not changed anything and then all of the sudden my body was reacting to what I was eating by dropping to low levels. It may have to do with stress and what it's doing to my body. I think I will do mostly protein for a bit and then slowly add in a few carbs here and there. Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to google

Increase the natural fats. Real food -eggs with bacon on bacon fat... .. Add a few nuts.
When I was dealing with my worst RH - a tbs of nut butter first thing am was a wonderful way to start a day.
Nuts are the miracle food: fat+ proteins+ carbs.. 1 tbs of almond buttermade my day really good.
Skip low ?or not fat items.
Use avocado... Butter. ..
My meals are typically : for every 20 gr of protein I get 10-20 gr of fat... And no more than 10 gr of carbs...
Good luck.

I'm not postop nearly as far as you guys are, but I'm well past the point where most people start having issues with RH. Maybe I've been avoiding it because I do get quite a bit of fat in my diet. I usually get 70 grams of fat in a day. Some days a lot more.
