I found out that the 12 month health education thing with my insurance that I have to go through is just 1 monthly phone call that last's 20 minutes. grrrrrrrr So aggravated that I have to wait a year for something like that!!!!!!! No way to get out of it either!

Hi Terri,

I am so sorry to hear this! I understand your frustration!  When I met with my surgeon I told him I needed to have this surgery ASAP or I would change my mind. He laughed and said then his program is not for me.  He felt it was important to get it "right between the ears before re-arranging you're plumbing".  And he was right!  I credit my long term success with the time I spent pre-op working on my head issues.

Use this time to start making small changes.  Know exactly what to eat and do to lose your weight and hit goal.  The hard part?  Deal with your head issues!  The reasons we eat in the first place.  Log what you eat when and what is going on around you when you do eat. This will help you ID your triggers and then put in place sets to stop them.  For example, I am an emotional eater and find when it's been a stressful day I want chocolate.  I don't have anything in my house chocolate.  If I did I would eat it. I do have sugar free chocolate syrup I put in Greek fat free yogurt and eat that instead.

Come here often and share with us how it's going!

That sucks.  I had my seminar in January,  and even though I didn't have time requirements with my insurance company,  it took me 8 months to get in for surgery.  I was chomping at the bit to get it moving.

It will go faster than you think.  Take this time to get yourself ready. Just because they can't cut into you for 12 months doesn't mean you can't work it now.

Stick around,  we'll keep you entertained.  Make a challenge to see how many days streak though can get using my fitness pal. See how much weight you can lose before surgery.  Make small goals and small changes while you wait.

I took my 6 month program as a 'you cannot fail at this' or the surgeon will kick you out of the program. Plus all the $$$ I had spent. I put my head down and worked... Lost 52 pounds before surgery.

I did the telephone program and believe it is one big reason that I was successful with surgery.

Friendly suggestion:  instead of thinking of it as "waiting" time think of it as "preparation" time.  Like supershopper, I lost pre-WLS weight knowing RNY was going to continue the progress like never before.  I started support group, high-protein foods, an exercise regiment, no liquids with meals, etc. well ahead of time to get my mindset off to a running start.  It also gave the medical team and me confidence surgery would have less risk attached to it. It was BLESSED time, you'll see.

Thank y'all for all the nice words! I will definitely do what needs to be done. I was just frustrated because I have always been the type of person that bites at the bit and wants it over with once I make a decision to do something. lol Y'all are the best encouragers!

There is a lot you could learn around here in a year.

I had a long weight as well. I came here and read. I talked with people who had different surgeries. I read books and blogs.

It did prevent me from making a "it's been 3 weeks and I'm not losing post" but I did make an early post about the joys of mashed potatoes.
