3 months in to my 6 months of nutrition visits
Hi all, This is my first post but I have been lurking for a month or so.... I am 3 months in to my 6 months of the supervised diet and I have gained about 8-9 pounds. I was not given a pre-surgery weightloss goal or anything but I am starting to worry that my insurance (Anthem Healthkeepers) may turn me down. I hope not since I have be following recommendations....and I still have a couple months to turn it around. Hoping to have RNY around June.... Fingers crossed.

Hello and welcome. The diet will help you to change your eating habits AFTER your surgery. It is very important for them to know if you can eat to plan because if you try and eat "normal" after the RNY, you will have horrible complications.
If you have any co-morbidity that helps their decision. Remember that this tool is only an aid to help lose weight. I really hope you can get this done. Good luck.
I gained slightly during my first round of supervised diet. I confessed to my nutritionist that I didn't know how to control myself, and that I was so afraid to screw this up after surgery. She suggested a therapist who specialized in eating disorders, and going to her was the best thing I've ever done for myself. Truly, surgery was the second best thing.
When I went back into the nutrition program 6 months later, I lost 35 lbs in the three months before surgery (12/18/15). I went into the OR confident that I am going to be 100% successful, as I now have strategies to deal with head hunger. In the 10 weeks surgery I've lost another 47 lbs.
I know how it feels to want to go full speed ahead, and not want any delays, but I am so happy that I dealt with my "head issues" first before making such a huge investment in terms of money, time, and my body. The one year delay was completely worth it to me.
You will need to check with your insurance. Mine would not approve if I didn't lose weight. They wanted to see that I could follow a plan. I've lost 26 pounds since November 15th doing a 1200/cal per day low carb diet. I've had many days where I've failed, but I've just started all over the next day.
I wasn't given a goal either, and have Anthem BCBS.
As a side note: my surgeon's nurse also confided that he would not do surgery if you gained weight. He wanted to know I was serious about it.
I would check with your surgeon/insurance. What kind of plan are you following? Are you logging your meals in a journal or an app? My fitness pal is a good one.
Good luck! We are all in this together!

Thank you! I am using My Fitness Pal and I really like it. I had been doing Weigh****chers for 2.5 years prior to this so I think I didn't make the transition very well. I am starting to lose again but since I had been on some sort of program for a long time I am not getting the "Big Bang" of weight loss that some folks typically get when starting a new plan. In my 3 visits so far we have incorporated some behavior changes that I have done well with but we haven't even discussed a calorie "target". I guess that may be part of my issue...since turning 40 a couple of years ago my ability lose weight has become very difficult no matter what plan I am following. I am trying to turn this around in the next couple of months so that I won't get turned down.
