RNY over 10 years ago...Hiatal hernia with most of pouch through hernia....questions
I've been having bad reflux. Put on prilosec...had to increase dosage. Had chest xray for something else and they noted a hiatal hernia. Had endoscopy and esophagus looked ok...ordered barium swallow. Radiologist told him in the room that most of my pouch was through the hiatal hernia.
Now I'm reading conflicting posts that 1. Can't do reflux surgery there is nothing to wrap to help it.
So my question is has anyone had this? Did they just fix the hernia? Did they fix the hernia and revised the RNY?
I don't know how long it's been there as these symptoms are on and off. I started at 270 got down to 122 and now up to 190. The weight gain has been over the last maybe 5 years. Initial surgery was 2001.
Anybody with experience or knowledge to this would be helpful. I have an appt with my WLS on March 10...just getting a head start on what I might be in for.
Thanks,
Brenda
Yes had upper endoscopy and Barium swallow today showed a good portion of my pouch is through the hernia. I have an appt with my WLS on the 10th about this and called his office today to let them know what the radiologist said...he won't be in till tomorrow so I was just seeing if anyone else went through this.
Have no idea...New one on us. They may be able to reattach the old stomach to the remaining good part of the pouch. My WLS surgeon said it can be done...But it is major surgery and regain is likely. But for those with no other choices reattachment is there...If the old stomach is still working.
Just wondering if the surgeon will retie the hernia (using a mesh) and then cut away some of the pouch that can heal and function. The nice thing about (most/all) bariatric surgeons is that they were general surgeons for several years. They have seen gun shot/car victims and have had to put back together tough situations. There may be a second surgeon in the room when your surgery is done...For different ideas on what is best...They may not know till they get in there. I doubt they can do the surgery from down the throat...Good luck on your journey...And it is a journey for all of us. Brian
Update: Spoke to my bariatric surgeon...he said if I had no symptoms there is nothing to do...but I"m having major symptoms...had to run around today and get him the CD of the barium swallow and endoscopy pics...so I did that and overnighted it to them.
He didn't sound like it was a surgery he wanted to do. My hernia on the official report is "moderate" and severe GERD.
I'm so lost in not finding anything for that someone has gone through this...I can't be magical number 1 :)
