Raw vegetables? Cant eat?
Hey everyone, doing research on VSG vs RNY..
Reading some posts on here that were provided, it says to avoid eating raw veggies and fruits. Is that true for most people? Seems crazy!
I'm assuming because body may have issues with both moving thru the system and breaking down the skin? But if we're supposed to chew the crap (literally?) out of our food, that should be helped, maybe guess not
What kinds of veggies are people not able to eat raw? Carrots? Cucumber? Are pickles raw? lol Tomato? ...spinach/lettuce?

I have a sleeved stomach and at 6 years out can eat fruit or vegetable I choose. Some ppl can eat some things and not others. Everyone is different as to tolerating.
carby vegetables and fruit are pure sugar. You might as well be eating spoonfuls of table sugar. The body doesn't know the difference in. Fruit or a snickers. It is all sugar to the body.
as long as the body is given pure sugar, fruit! It will not burn as much stored fat. Burning stored fat is where weight loss happens.
Two reasons why you want to avoid CERTAIN veggies and fruits, especially early on (raw or cooked)...
1. They can be very hard for the new pouch to handle, especially fibrous stuff like celery. I remember eating some cabbage a few months after surgery and I wanted to die. I can eat cabbage now without a problem, but still can't eat celery without chewing a million times.
2. Most fruits, and some veggies, are high in sugar and carbs. Doesn't matter if it's fruit sugar or Hershey Bar sugar... sugar is sugar. And until you hit your goal and figure out if/when you can handle reintroducing fruit and veggies, you need to limit yourself to the lower-carb versions. Otherwise they are taking up space and time you could be dedicating to protein, healthy fats and vitamins. Plus if you are dumper, some fruits and veggies may make you dump.

Early post op, you should avoid raw vegetables and fruits because of your pouch/stomach healing. Once your surgeon clears you, you can eat them. However, stick with low carb and non starchy veggies like cauliflower/broccoli and such. As for fruits, I stick to berries, only. Strawberries, raspberries, blue and black berries. All the other fruits are too high in sugar and will hinder your maximum weight loss and maintenance ability.
Good luck!
I see you've been here a while, did you know cj or Charles Tufano from the forum? Back in 2001. Had rny and passed away in hospital
