Crops can still use particular pesticides and be considered organic; the USDA has a whole list. Being "organic" does not mean "chemical free."

I grow a bit of my own hydroponically. I buy this "nutrient solution" which is basically liquified fish poo and even THAT has chemicals in it to keep the poo from going more rancid.
I dont think there is a way to do it chemical free. Even fertilizers which feeds the plants are chemicals.

I've never been able to find a tomato as tasty as my mom's. I've tried every variety, but I think it has to do with the soil, as even the same brand tastes different than hers. I try to go home in August every year to take advantage of them. Her tomatoes are my most powerful comfort food.
