Post op bowel movement
Thank you for the input. I was worried that I was going to end up dehydrated. I never dreamed it would be so hard to drink 5 ounces an hour. I am really trying to stay optimistic but feelings of regret are popping up! Not that I can change it now!
I don't think you are getting good instructions for where you are now... When you go back try to talk to another person. That person is already telling you to stretch your pouch.
Check and make sure that you cannot go for all your protein shake first, then other fluids. No one that I know got it all in the first week or two. For me, the protein shake counted as fluid also.
I was told that is the goal and you should work towards it for the first few weeks, even though you might not get it all in. When everything is healed it will prob be much easier.
The first few weeks, it took me 3-4 hours to sip 12 oz of protein shake. I used the ones that had 35 oz of prot in one 12-oz can. So, all I had to do was drink 2 of those a day (one from 8am to noon) and the second one (from 4 pm on). I drank water or tea otherwise.
You are in a period of experimentation and adjustment. IMHO, Put on our big girl pants - it's too soon to have regrets, you're just adjusting and feeling crappy from the anesthesia. I suggest suspending ultimate judgment for a year until you really can decide about joys and regrets about having WLS.
Hang in there.
Sharon
I'm concerned about your statement about regrets popping up. I found this post that I did awhile ago to summarize why I got WLS. (I think you need to wait a year to see how it all balances out before true regrets are appropriate). It might be helpful for you to clarify your reasons so you spend all your energies moving forward. I acknowledge that there will be hurdles, nothing is ever perfect.
My Post:
Be as nervous as you like, that's normal, but also use this time to get clear on why you are doing it. Most likely your reasons are more than your appearance. I would suggest making a list and then you can check them off over the next months and have motivation to keep the weight off. For what it's worth, here is the logic I had for surgery:
1 - My knee is messed-up and if I do not get the weight off, I will be looking at knee surgery.
2 - I just lost 100+ pounds with a conventional diet and put 90% of it back on within 2 years, so I am not one of the lucky 3-5% who will keep the weight off.
3 - WLS is easier to recover from than knee surgery.
4 - WLS was (and is) the right option for me.
5- Things that will be better: enjoying the outdoors, clothes, . . .
I was more than nervous - before surgery I updated my will, changed my insurance benficiaries, had everything notarized, made sure a lawyer-friend had a folder with all my important papers, (I had the advanced directives form to fill out but I did not get around to it). That is just me - be prepared. But, now all that stuff is done.
But, when it was all said and done, and I was in pre-op and felt the first wave of sedative kick in, I looked at the clock and my reaction was - 7:42, my new lucky number! I had difficult times - most of us had, but pre-op clarity will help you get through a lot of post-op crap.
May I humbly suggest you generate a list and write down your motivations for surgery. It might help you prevent 'buyers remorse' and give you focus to get through any difficult times. And give you something to do while you are waiting for the insurance approval.
Best of Luck, or more currently, MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!!
Sharon
Thank you for your input. You are right. I don't actually regret having the surgery. I was just so miserable from being so bloated and full from trying to get all my liquids in that I had a a moment of self pity. I've continued on and am doing better everyday!
I had a meltdown about a week post-surgery. I took some pain meds and went to bed. My friend/caretaker (retired nurse) kept telling me that I just had 2 major surgeries so I will fell like crap (by-pass and hernia repair).
I would still suggest you write up your reasons for having the WLS - it has helped me keep my eye on the long term.
Best of everything.
Sharon
That's a great idea. I am 9 days post-op and getting all of my liquids down just fine now. In fact I'm a little concerned that they're going down too easy! I'm so afraid of stretching my pouch.
I bought extra strength Senekot before I ever went in for the surgery because no matter what surgery you have your always constipated because of the pain medications given miralax will do very very little to get you going by the time you see a doctor they're going to want to put a suppository in your rear end, I advise Senekot immediately take at least 3 tablets maybe more , natural fiber tablets
