drastic weight gain
RNY June 2008. Did great and no problems other than typical dumping up until 2011 when I went through a divorce. Due to overwhelming stress, I developed stomach ulcers and started becoming very sick with vomiting, and unable to keep food down. Was prescribed meds and treatments were tried with no success resulting in surgery to remove the ulcer which was located near my RNY connection. 8 months later I developed a large hernia near the bottom of the connection that ended up having to be removed and mesh placed in order to keep it from returning. I've had several upper endoscopy scopes, as well as colonoscopy testing while I had trouble keeping food down. Results were always the same, stomach ulcers. My last hospital visit was May 2015 for 3 weeks as a result of severe onset of stomach pain in which a small defect was discovered near my small intestine, and repaired. Since that last hospital visit, I have gained 40 pounds. I am discouraged and I feel miserable with my gain. I can tell a huge difference in my energy level and I don't where to turn. My fear is that the endoscopy procedures stretched out my pouch ( this was always something I was told COULD happen but not likely). I am anemic and have undergone iron infusions and this is being monitored. I feel lost and that I am failing with all the success that I had! Original starting weight prior RNY 331 and lowest weight was 140, current weight 200. HELP
im sorry to hear this... but it can be remedied.... i myself am at alil over a yr since surdery. and in the last 2 months i got hit with major depression.... and i been drinking 5 days out the week, gainded 17 lbs just from wine ..... admited it to my wife now were werking on it.... just find support.... stay strong, and set your path.... we all know failure. and tough times.... just get back to the basics and work it... good luck
Sorry to hear you had so many issues. Glad you feeling better.
When I had ulcers - or pouch irritation - the pouch is swollen and it feels like it is super small. Once things heals - the capacity - how much food I can eat seams to increase. And it feels like I can eat and eat and eat.
Plus - eating is a pleasure (not a chore) so it is very easy to forget the rules and gain weight.
Going back to basic is the only option to lose weight. Dense proteins at every meal, measuring and logging portions, no grazing (i graze when my pouch is irritated) , and limiting calories.
To lose 1lb a week I need to follow a very strict diet 800-900 calories a day, with 60-80 gr of proteins, no more than 40-50 gr of carbs (from non starchy veggies and nuts) and the rest calories from good fats.
I do avoid processed foods - like protein bars, and make sure I eat 2-3 meals and 2 snacks. Increasing water is essential. I still can't (pouch doesn't like) plain water so I make sure I use whatever my pouch tolerates and I make sure I drunk at least 16 oz of "water" between every meal.
Good luck.
